Here are some statistics from Courtney in 2013 and Franti in 2015.
Hitting: Sets Kills K/Set Err Tot/Atk Hit %
Courtney: 120 297 2.47 96 740 0.272
Franti: 112 296 2.64 106 773 0.246
Defense Tot/Rec Rec/Err Pct Digs Dig/Set BS BA B/Set
Courtney 466 14 .970 301 2.51 28 59 0.73
Franti 487 25 .949 208 1.88 11 43 0.48
Their serving stats are hardly worth mentioning. According to the stats I looked at, Courtney has 1 ace and 8 errors for the season; Franti had 10 aces and 17 errors. Make of that what you will, I don’t stand behind those stats and when it comes to my slacker staff, all I’m seeing at buttholes and elbows as they run away from the serving stats.
Overall observations: Courtney’s defensive stats are better than Franti’s—particularly blocking. Offensively, while Courtney’s stats are better, they are not markedly better. Main observation last: The 2013 team was way better than the 2015 team. They won a National Championship! As a sophomore, Courtney had McClendon, Scott, Slay, Grant, and Hancock for teammates and had Gonzalez and Fuller in the backcourt. Megan sure picked a better team on which to be a sophomore and that certainly helped her offensive stats. So, I’m not ready to give up on Franti as a six-rotation player. This was a tough year.
As Mike Meyers always said in Kawfee Tawk, “Discuss.”

And here's how I wanted to introduce the subject:
Post mortems on DigNittany and Volleytalk have adressed doubts about how well Ali Franti might do replacing Megan Courtney as a six-rotation player. I have not seen anyone compare Courtney’s sophomore season to Franti’s. And don’t take these stats to the bank or an argument on Volleytalk unless you check them yourself or believe I have credibility in those circles.

Six thoughts: 1) as you pointed out, we shouldn't look at these stats in a vacuum. The differences between the 2013 and 2015 teams are significant. I hope I can get some time this weekend to focus on some of them. 2) I think it would be useful to look at both freshman and sophomore stats (don't know if I'll get to that). 3) Club Coach has commented that in his opinion, Courtney is one of the best blocking D1 outsides in the past 20 years -- maybe the best. Frantti isn't that player. But she probably is/will be a more dynamic hitter. 4) for me, Courtney was one of the best six-rotation players I've seen at Penn State, bringing great back row defense. As Coach Rose said in one post-match interview, Courtney made the players around her better. Frantti was, IMHO, improved on D as the season progressed (to a point -- see #5), but on defense, she doesn't appear to have the impact Courtney had. 5) Which brings me to what I think is the most important point: I don't think Frantti was really 100% healthy all year. I don't know what the injury was, but to my inexpert eye, something was off (as in an injury of some kind) that was different than sophomore slump, or new setter, and I think it affected her play. If I'm right, then the comparison, while completely understandable, is somewhat apples-to-oranges. 6. Bottom line -- I think they are both great, but significantly different, players, with different strengths and weaknesses. I think Frantti is being significantly undervalued by many fans. I'm bullish -- but she's not going to be Megan Courtney, just as Megan Courtney wasn't Ali Frantti.

I would have liked to see Frantti's and Courtney's stats compared over their freshman years. I don't think Frantti's performance this year is representative of her overall quality and future production. I think Frantti will undoubtedly be Penn State's best 6-rotation player in 2016. Of course, I'm a big Frantti fan and might be a bit biased.

I can be shamed into looking at cumulative statistics, but there's no way in hell I can be shamed into looking at game-by-game or play-by-play stats. I'm not made of sterner stuff. Most of the stats I listed are available on the PSU and DigNittany websites. For some reason, receptions and receiving percentage were not. Did I mention that my staff is composed of, oh... nevermind.
As Freshman, here's what I was able to discover for Courtney and Franti:
Hitting: Sets Kills K/Set Err Tot/Atk Hit % Franti 122 391 3.2 113 898 .310 Courtney 120 240 2.0 88 832 .241
Defense Tot/Rec Rec/Err Pct Digs Dig/Set BS BA Blk/Set Franti N/A 13 N/A 159 1.3 10 48 0.48 Courtney N/A 22 N/A 237 1.98 32 69 0.84
A word about serving: As a freshman, Franti had 28 aces, averaged 0.23 aces/set and had 41 errors. Courtney had 13 aces, averaged 0.11 aces/set and had 31 errors.
Obviously, Franti was an offensive machine in her freshman year, but it was Hancock's senior year and the team hit .340 or something. Courtney's defensive stats--particularly solo blocks stand out--as they always have.
Have a Happy New Year! Let's hope 2016 matches the expectations many of us had at the close of the 2014 season.

Thank you for providing this info. Very nice. I think Frantti did not play as much back row in her freshman year as well, so I'm sure that affected her improvement. Whereas Courtney was a natural. I think offensively Frantti will be back to form in 2016. At least that's what I expect from here in the early part of the season when injuries will likely not be a factor. May you and your family have a Blessed New Year as well! I would say, let's hope 2016 matches the expectations I had at the close of the 2011 or 2012 season (can only go up from here).
