I mentioned this on a thread on volleytalk and thought I would bring it up here. Why do you think that we don't see any PSU back row players on the national team? There have been some great players and it surprises me that they don't at least get a shot.

Berta, for one! Gosh, i'm with you in wondering. I heard one theory several years ago: the stats for any PSU back row player in the modern (since 2007) era have looked lower comparable to other BIG and NCAA players because the block diminishes their chances...they just don't have as many mistakes at the net to make up for. i also think there's an unspoken proportionality factor; NT doesn't want to be all-PSU. But i also hadn't seen any beyond Berta playing abroad...

But i also hadn't seen any beyond Berta playing abroad... Both of those could be among the reasons (I have no idea), but are the selections to the NT really that arbitrary? Certainly, subjective, but would Karch, for example, exclude a Penn State player if he thought they were the best candidate? Would he worry much about their college stats if his eyes said "best backrow player on the court"? Maybe. Who were the players that beat them out (showing I really don't know )
