www.gopsusports.com/sports/w-volley/mtt/psu-w-volley-mtt.htmlThere are two new updates: Caroline Graham, a Haiti setter transfer from UCLA. ?? Volunteer Assistance: Marcus Santos There are 8 new players adding to the team. Let's see how it turns out. Overall, there are 22 players on the team including 4 Setters, 9 DSs, 6 Opp/OHs, and only 3 MBs.

Roster has grown significantly in size, to 22 as mentioned above, v. 2015 (18, including 3 RS); and 2014 (20, including ?2 RS). One of the staff last year was kind enough to describe the RS-ing process, which i could not find documented in the annals of the NCAA: Before the season begins, Coach decides a few players he will likely leave in reserve. If he never has to resort to calling on them, they will be considered to have been RS for that season. A little less clear is what happens when early in the season a player suffers an injury and whether she'll be eligible for a RS.
I'm dying to see Gorrell and Novakovic in action at last.
Looks like 3 players are transfers (FL, UCLA and St Mary's, all national-caliber teams), though Graham from UCLA never played/had a FR RS season. Our last West Coast transfer didn't settle in as well (Dykstra), so there certainly are no guarantees.
The FL player, at 6', looks to be a potential challenger or legitimate backup for the Setter spot. I'm reminded of two situations: 1) when reigning champ Carpenter was replaced by Frosh Hancock (turned out to be a very good move); 2) when Racibarkus was not called up from the bench later that year to replace an injured Hancock, even though she seemed to be a credible backup.
Going to be an interesting summer.

So many new faces...to discern what position and how they fit on the team will be more than interesting. The teams that are most successful, have good chemistry besides the great players. We certainly have tons of talent. Running the team and emotionally leading the team is the characteristic I am most interested in seeing developed/evolved. We need a Christa Harmotto/Kristin Carpenter personality to get the game 'going' again. Less worries about mechanics (although it's an essential part of success), more spirit and optimism. I think these individuals come along every so often. Skill, smarts, charisma, and natural born leaders/therapists! Who knows which one or more of our newcomers will fill that void...if any. But I am sure looking forward to finding out. Several other BIG TEN teams will be favored over us this year. Takes some real pressure off, and adds lots of potential motivation. Been looking at the many tranfers that occurred this year throughout the country, and many teams have so much power, they will be expected to dominate. But let's face it, if you don't gel together as a team, and egos get in the way of chemistry, your results just might not match your star line-up. Here's hoping we find the balance and motivation, as well as one or two that can make the WHOLE team unified and driven to enjoy and excel. Go Lions!!

Not to put too much of a load on, but with Courtney and Whitney gone, the mantle seems to be going onto Washington's shoulders. We know she has the enthusiasm and spirit, and Coach has said a number of promising things about her leadership skills.
Also interested to see the change in Weiskircher after an off-season of reflection.

Two questions come to mind.

Is this the first year that we will have zero Redshirt Freshmen?

I've mentioned it elsewhere, but since i have no idea where, forgive me for repeating. A PSU staff member last year explained RS to me. From what i understood, we won't know if a freshman was redshirted until the conclusion of the season. It appears that as long as the player doesn't play, Coach has the option at the end of the year to declare that she was RS for the year. Apparently there is no NCAA authoritative document that we can find online that confirms how this works. I've seen something for football, nothing for VB. I believe this means that *theoretically* you could have a backup setter not play during the season and RS her at the end (example: Weiskircher); that player could also *theoretically* be called upon at any time during the season if, say, the first string setter were injured. In the latter case, the season could not be counted as RS, even if the player only played for a set. Given the yuge size of our squad, I would put $$$ on 2-3 of these players being slated for RS for the season; i would suppose that Coach will look to ones that need more seasoning and play positions where we have enough bench, as determined by observing this summer. Hope that helps! If anyone has anything more authoritative, i'd love to know more!

I'm getting excited for the new season, when do you think we will start hearing news about the team? Does pre-season start in mid-August?

I'm getting excited for the new season, when do you think we will start hearing news about the team? Does pre-season start in mid-August? 1. When my BOLO regarding my shiftless, slacker staff alloiws me to locate them, reel them in, give them a piece of my mind, and marvel at their ability to turn a deaf ear and a blind eye, and generally float through life in defiance of the law of gravity and other laws (thus my BOLO). 2. Yes, early/mid August.
