On June 17, 2016 we met with Coach Russ Rose, who has served as Head Coach of the Penn State Women’s Volleyball team since 1979. We knew that Coach Rose reads widely, and in particular, books about sports and coaching, so in early March, when we wanted recommendations for a sports book reading list, we asked him. He suggested “When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of Vince Lombardi,” by David Maraniss), and said there were great books on Bill Parcells, Mike Krzyzewski, John Wooden, Pat Summit, and other great coaches. The DigNittany staff settled on the Maraniss book, and on “Wooden on Leadership,” by John Wooden and Steve Jamison, and “Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection,” by Geno Auriemma with Jackie MacMullan. There are obvious differences among Lombardi, Wooden, and Auriemma – different eras, pro-versus-college, male-versus-female athletes, but despite those differences, we found that the three books discussed several common issues and challenges. Coach Rose kindly agreed to discuss those issues, and his thoughts on coaching generally. As a five-time winner of AVCA National Coach of the Year, 14-time winner of Big Ten Coach of the Year, and 2007 inductee into the AVCA Hall of Fame, we thought Coach Rose was in a good position to do so. Here's a link to our interview with Coach Rose, edited for length and clarity, and divided into five parts: I. The Difference Between Excellence and Success; II. How Do You Get to Carnegie (or Rec) Hall? III. The Cowboy’s Uncertainty Principle; IV. Getting (and Staying) On Top; and V. Fame.
