Maybe not accept, but this might be what we’re about this year.” Rose, on the other hand, said the team just needs to play better at home. “We need to play hard, we need to play with some enthusiasm, and get some of the fans who were discouraged the last time we played,” Rose said. “If you remember, we had two of those games won, and were unable to close the door…I think the players want to improve on how they did and we’ll try and keep getting better in some areas.” Rose said some of the areas in which he’s seen “flashes” of improvement include team defense and said there were some rotations in which some of the players did “a real nice job” in the back row. “When we can dig some balls in the back row, that helps for sure,” Rose said. “It helps all teams, but it’s not consistent. We had some flashes last weekend where I thought we dug a good ball in all of the different zones, and that’s what you need to do when you start playing more veteran-type teams.”

Glad to hear Rose thinks D is up, too.
Have no data to back this up, but aside from the inevitable couple shanked REs in each match, I thought most of the passing was improved this year. I thought I observed Abby not having to move much at all to get to the ball. Lots of passes were 3's, to my eye.
If that's correct (and not just wishful thinking), it's going to mean that the setter will have maximum choices on who to set; onus will be fully on the setter to go to the right person at the right time. I see the AE stat -- where hitter hits into the block -- as a reflection more often of the setter making a poor choice shared with the hitter having no time to adjust. Yes, it'll happen. But it needs to be minimized, unless we're aiming at tooling.

Agreed as to passing and even serving, errors notwithstanding.
Thus far, I do think that setter choices need improvement. Not enough middle quicks, which seem to work every time, probably not enough sets to the Opposite, and over use of Simone Lee. At least we can understand why they are going to Lee; she has been pretty successful. Too many sets to Lee may wear her out for sets 4 and 5, and also makes it too easy for the opponents to set the block.
I do think Frantti has been trying to tool the block. Perhaps she is not jumping well. It does seem like the block is getting hands on virtually every one of her swings.

Sometimes "Boosters" get a little too vocal and it's pretty obvious from people's body language and looks after the match at the ice cream socials that they aren't thrilled. Russ has very high expectations for his players and program but he is also a little more even keeled than people like me. (Can't speak for other....wink) Actually I think Russ was more concerned when NYLINE wore a Cubs baseball cap, and glasses with Walkman headphones over top to the presser......then he knew the fans were unhappy.

It was much worse when I wore my John Cook mask and came with my Herbie the Husker puppet.

Is Herbie the thing that looks like a Bob's Big Boy mascot on steroids? Yes. Scary I think the Wisconsin Badger looks kinda weird too, but it's hard to out-weird Herbie when its on its head.

Warning Will Robinson....
Terrapins raising head.... Just beat Oklahoma 3-1 today.
A nationally ranked recruit (when was the last time the Terps had one of those in WVB?) Gina Milana is having a heck of a start...matching Lee's numbers by the looks of it.
Apparently PSU didn't interest her that much, but Aird did. hmmmm....

And so it begins...
BIG/BTN is broadcasting IL v PU tonight at 7 EDST on cable.
Someone had asked or opined about just how good PU is. This may partially answer the question.

We've discussed Coach's ?unprecedented? use of multiple DSs in the back row for more than serving. Is that what produced this stat, from the team's website?
- Penn State has excelled defensively this season, limiting its opponents to 0.091 hitting -- good for first in the Big Ten Conference and second in the nation.
