I just checked BluePenquin's RPI Future's on VolleyTalk. Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/65664/rpi-futures-week-25-16#ixzz4LPz4ZaxmAs of 9/26/16: Projected RPI Rank (Previous week projection) Team (Projected Wins - Losses) - SOS Rank40. (33) Penn State (18-13) - 19 We've dropped this week, even though we won both matches. Go figure. Last week (on 9/19/16) Penn State was predicted to finish the season at 19-12. I'll keep you all posted on future "Futures Ranking."

When I watched Bluepenguin's projections for PSU in preceding years, she had some uncanny accuracy. Those situations were different, in that PSU was usually near the top of the poll and the uncertainty was between two and four defeats. This year, the margin and uncertainty is much larger. Let's hope the team has some hidden talent.

I just checked this FIGSTATS preliminary RPI rankings website (per a VT post): ncaastats.figstats.net/volleyball-rpi.cgiAnd YIKES!!!! PSU is not listed in the top 50! PSU is somewhere around 52-53 depending on the algorithm (i.e., tab) you choose.

The next three games are very important--as if we needed to understand how important some wins against quality teams might be. Why do character-building experiences involve uncomfortable situations? It's kind of amazing how my expectations hinged on set three in last year's PSU-Nebraska game at Rec Hall.

Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/65769/rpi-futures-week-10-16As of 10/03/16: Projected RPI Rank (Previous week projection) Team (Projected Wins - Losses) - SOS Rank22. (40) Penn State (21-10) - 15 Incredible, PSU moved up from 40 to 22 after this past weekend's wins. A couple more wins against good teams and we won't have to worry about whether we will host.

Just checked FIGSTATS and PSU is now listed at 29. So why did we drop from last week? Actually we gained 24 spots in FIGSTATS since last week. We were listed at 52-53.

As of 10/10/16: Projected RPI Rank (Previous week projection) Team (Projected Wins - Losses) - SOS Rank15. (22) Penn State (23-8) - 21 RPI Futures is provided courtesy of Bluepenquin on Volleytalk: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/65881/rpi-futures-week-10-16?page=1&scrollTo=1522865PSU moved up 6 spots with a projected Win-Loss final record of 23-8, which is much better than anticipated. I surmise that this difference has more to it than just the MN win. I'm looking into it. If we stay in the top 16 of the RPI rankings, PSU will host in the first round of the tournament. The NCAA and FIGSTATS (i.e., current) RPI ranking also has PSU moving up 7 spots to 22 from 29.

Bluepenquin has also put together a chart of future standings for the B1G conference based on winning 1 more game or losing one more game than projected." Here is the +1/-1 projections. This gives the projected RPI Rank if the team wins one extra game or an extra loss. Spots 5 through 17 or 25 is very narrow so there is more variance than usual. I think this means that where a team will rank is dependent more on what teams around them do than usual. Wins are based on conference wins, the 1st set is the rounded projected winner (remove partial wins). This also assumes no change in projected bonus points - which given how close some of these spots are...
Big Ten. Current RPI Future Rank. Team (proj conference wins - RPI rank) (+1 conference win - RPI rank) (-1 conference win - RPI rank)
1. Wisconsin (15 Wins-3) (16 Wins-1) (14 Wins-3) 2. Nebraska (17 Wins-1) (18 Wins-1) (16 Wins-3) 4. Minnesota (15 Wins-4) (16 Wins-4) (14 Wins-4) 7. Penn State (16 Wins-7) (17 Wins-5) (15 Wins-13) 8. Michigan (11 Wins-11) (12 Wins-6) (10 Wins-16) 12. Michigan State (12 Wins-11) (13 Wins-6) (11 Wins-16) 18. Purdue (9 Wins-17) (10 Wins-13) (8 Wins-21) 32. Ohio State (11 Wins-30) (12 Wins-24) (10 Wins-34) 42. Illinois (12 Wins-44) (13 Wins-39) (11 Wins-50) 56. Iowa (10 Wins-55) (11 Wins-51) (9 Wins-62) 73. Indiana (5 Wiins-73) (6 Wins-64) (4 Wins-86)" Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/65991/rpi-futures-week-10-16#ixzz4NOkySKM8

I would think IF Penn State wins BIG 10 Conference then they will be top 4 seed. If this happens then they will host a regional providing they win rounds 1/2. If this happens, Penn State's final RPI before tournament will not prevent a top 4 seed. IMHO.
