Well this is certainly a pleasant surprise. Who would've thought?
PSU looks to sweep another Michigan team this weekend.
PSU up 15-10 in the 3rd set; ace by Washington. T.O. Michigan.

Lee is adding up the errors now in the 3rd; give her a rest Russ. Her hitting has dropped to .182 EDIT: Or maybe, Michigan is keying on her more this set.
PSU up 22-15 in the 3rd. Easy cruising now. Incredible.

This is the best PSU has played in a long time as they did not let Michigan to go on any runs in all three sets. One of the major pitfalls for this team has been that they let other teams go on a four, five or even more points in many of their games against some of their better opponents. In my opinion, this is even better performance than yesterday's game against MSU. Hopefully, they can carry it to next games as things will get tougher.

I like what I'm seeing from Detering so far. My only question mark is how she will do in pressure situations?
Micha used to thrive in big matches; she'd play better the more pressure was on her.

I know what you mean, but there really was some pressure on the whole team this weekend. Alot of doubting Thomases, at home. Could have gone south, but the players stepped up and delivered two solid wins.

While I believe we won't be able to get a good read on Detering until she plays in a tough road match, nyline makes a good point here. The attitude surround the team after the 2-3 start was not good. I don't think a lot of people would have predicted this dominat weekend 3 or even 2 weeks ago. This team has developed a killer instinct and a toughness about them that I am really, really enjoying. They are completely unbothered by close sets; in fact, they seem to even be energized by them. Everyone is playing well, don't think you can single in on one player. However, this sort of instinct/toughness was not present a year ago. Tough matches ahead. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Her serving is very good and she works extremely hard (from an interview I saw a while back). But, I was referring more to once and done matches, like the playoffs. There are not many players who thrive in pressure cooker situations (in any sport). Perhaps the team chemistry can overcome the need of any one player feeling like they have to carry the team.

It was unintentional. I think most of us have harbored some doubts this season and last.

Outstanding weekend of volleyball! Playing loose and having fun is what I witnessed. The communication on the court has been superb. Simone is in beast mode right now. She hits the ball with so much authority. She's upped her game to another level. Frantti and Washington are playing like they did their freshman year. Holcomb looks more relaxed and comfortable compared to last season. She is conditioned better also. Detering is playing with so much confidence. I was very anxious to see how Gorrell was going to be involved this year. She's been a pleasant surprise and steady. Kendall's hustle hasn't gone unnoticed. She's a gamer.

wow, Michigan hitting went from .321 (which PSU won hitting .419!) to .175 all the way to .125 in the third. That is some defense clamping down. Detering with 11 digs -- that jumps out at you. And Gorrell and Washington both hitting .500...

And Gorrell and Washington both hitting .500... Yep! We also sided out at 74% for the match and that wins a lot of matches in the B1G. We are passing very very well. As far as clamping down, the team serving is doing much of that damage. It is consistently getting teams out of system and the team blocking and defensive scheme is getting established and making plays. Just wearing teams down on serve receive. The team is in a good place....and the fans are getting there too. I'm sure some hiccups may hit the team....but that's how tough this league is.

Good serving night? If I am not mistaken we had 9 service errors. what surprises me is that those errors came from servers whose serves are not that overpowering at least not when I have seen them serving. Serving is a habit and when they fail in practice then they must adjust perhaps as simple as moving back a step. How long have these players been playing the game so that they have probably served 5000 times? We don't have anyone whose serves are overpowering, that is our biggest problem now. Perhaps we need another coach for serving.

Perhaps we need another coach for serving. Effective serving doesn't have to be overpowering. You measure serving by serving runs and PSU is getting runs. Hancock's serve was great not because it was fast. It was great because it was fast AND had a nasty unpredictable hook that no one could really prepare for. We may not see another server like Hancock at PSU but tough serving can take lots of forms.
