We’ve put together a set of tables comparing the stats for this year’s team, and selected individuals, to the stats for the 2015 team, and selected individuals. It’s not a perfect comparison (even though, totally by chance, this year’s team has played 17 matches, and the 2015 team played 34 matches), given that this year’s team has only played six B1G matches, and no NCAA tournament matches, whereas the 2015 team obviously played a full 20 B1G matches, plus three NCAA tournament matches. But here we are, and this is what we have. The big points for us? Simone Lee is having a monster year; Haleigh Washington is an offensive machine; and Megan Courtney was a great all-around player. For the rest, we’ll let the stats speak for themselves. Here's the link: 10-09-16: Comparison of 2016 vs. 2015 Selected Team and Individual StatsI'm interested in what others can tease out of these stats.

Looks about even thus far, especially Frantti (carbon copy). I think one big stat which doesn't show up (and is a difficult to acquire) is the passing efficiency. How many passes this year are 3-point, 2-point, 1-point, etc. vs last year? Also, it seems like the team is serving better in the last couple games vs the start of the season.
One thing seems clear to me, the team is playing better now than in the first couple matches. Therefore, the stats will take a little time to regress to the mean.

I think you would be surprised it's not as far off as you may think. I have my thoughts on this whole thing. I will say that this year's team is having fun and the coaches are doing a great job.

Wow. I know that took a lot of work to compose. So interesting.
I come away with lots of conclusions; one in particular is that the blocking and digging we got out of Courtney last year was like a hidden secret. We focused on her hitting; the rest of the rotation she brought huge numbers, too, even with being on the injured list for part of the season.
Gorrell shows as a great replacement at middle.

Another thing is that this year's team is getting better as the season progresses. Whereas last year's team seemed to regress as the season wore on.

Another thing is that this year's team is getting better as the season progresses. Whereas last year's team seemed to regress as the season wore on. I've returned from a week of vacation which, in terms of internet technology, compared favorably with the 1980s. I still haven't seen a second of the Michigan games, but did get to see some of the Minnesota game. The team looks good--somewhat like PSUMAUI envisioned in the afterglow from the 2014 season. I'm guarding against "dizzy with success" optimism, put putting pessimism aside is always a good thing.
