After a promising freshman season, I'm surprised by how little Rivera has been on the court this season. With her jump serve & backcourt explosiveness, I expected her to get more playing time this season. I realize she's, at best, our #3 setter. However, I figured that serve would help us this season. I must be missing something? Injury?
(I feel I should also note that Keeton Holcomb has played brilliantly this season & should absolutely be on the court whenever PSU doesn't need Thelen up front. She is also serving much better than last season, IMO. I'm not trying to say Rivera should take her spot because Keeton has certainly earned it. I'm still unsure of why Rivera hasn't come in to serve for others though.)

My guess: 1) what's she doing in practice. Coach seems to derive his D plans from what he sees at practice. We just don't know. 2) not sure I saw her doing quite as well as we all hoped she would. I don't think her serving or her acclimation to the new defense (e.g., running into people) were as good as others. 3) MANY Ds have, over the years, seen lots less play. Some only made it on the court at the end of the season in games that were predetermined. Harding, and others come to mind.

I thought she might be starting this year, based on what Russ said about her as a freshman. I remember she was very quick in defense and had a pretty good serve. My guess is that either a chemistry or communication issue is keeping her from playing.
I feel for her. However, because the team playing now is doing a fantastic job, I wouldn't want to mess with things too much.

I think the answer is pretty simple (though other than serving, where she had quite a few errors, I can't really document it) -- others played better in games and, I'd be willing to bet, in practice.

Classic overthinking syndrome?
