Wow the season sure has gotten interesting. I'm not able to watch the matches but Purdue's awful hitting percentage -- declining each set -- has become a pattern.
If you look at the Big Ten stats (http://www.bigten.org/library/stats/vb-pdfstats.pdf ), the stat that just leaps out at you is opponent's hitting percentage -- .110 including the OOC matches. Granted they haven't played some great offenses but that's awesome at this point in the season.
And that's with only average blocks and aces. So this is being done with consistent tough serving and floor defense. The number of digs is only average -- so is that because they're transitioning those digs into kills very efficiently? That probably means the digs are not only getting made, they're getting placed well. And/or maybe Detering is a very good transition setter?
Can't wait to hear from those of you who've seen the matches -- what are PSU's chances going into an incredibly difficult stretch of schedule? They haven't seen Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois or Ohio State yet so there's that.
I also wonder -- now that Penn State has the attention of the Sheffields and Cooks of the league, what they see from opponents is going to change. Will they target Detering out of system points like everybody targets Carlini, just to occupy her? And then how does PSU counter that? And people are going to pay tremendous attention Simone Lee now -- so can Frantti and Thelen handle more opportunities?

Every opponent present's different obstacles.
If we prepare and execute the game plan like we are doing and continue our wicked serving and minimize runs we are indeed a very good team.
Our servers were really "on" last night and that ball was dancing. On the road that can be an equalizer immediately to home court advantage.

I think PSU has a legitimate chance at being top tier if we can have at least 3 hitters playing efficiently every match. I don't like the thought of only have 2 go-to hitters. A good team will cue on them and make life difficult. Right now, we have Frantti, Thelen, and Gorrell who can be productive at times, but not consistently. I know any one of them can turn it up a notch late in a match. If they can hit efficiently against great teams (on the road), then look out.
