If there is a positive to take away from this match, maybe it's that this loss will fuel the fire for next weekend. Badgers lookout!

It looks like Thelen is going into her mid-season slump just like every other year. She had 3 hitting errors and hit zero so far. We must have a backup RS hitter. I like Thelen but wonder if Nia Reed is ever going to play Russ never likes to to make a move like that until we lose 2 or 3 times, which will probably be another week or two. This reminds me of our loss to North Carolina where we beat ourselves.

Well...us beating Ohio State tonight takes the sting out of this loss!!! Personally, I'd trade. I gave up watching in set 4. I didn't have the necessary moral courage. I'm surprised that they took that one. Set 3 was like a flashback from Colorado. Maybe a painful loss like this will help the team re-focus for the coming games. And perhaps the football team's performance may underscore how importance it is to never give up.

I think we all knew deep down that this season was dependent on how well we would play on the road. The next 3 matches will give us a clear look at what to expect for the remainder of the season and tourney, IMO.

Well...us beating Ohio State tonight takes the sting out of this loss!!! And might be a boon to PSU recruiting in the future! Coach Franklin said after the game that he sees this upset as the start of the healing process for the kids (i.e., all former and present student-athletes).

Where is the mid season lump for Heidi shown? Her freshman year she played in 6 matches. Her sophomore she appeared in 23 matches with 41 kills and third on the team in blocks. She recorded 9 blocks against either Michigan or MSU in Late October matches and then had several strong games in the playoffs with 7 kills in the second round of the NCAA. Reed is an exceptional athlete but obviously the coaching staff feels she is not the replacement at least so far.

I agree with this -- Heidi had an off match, but overall, her play has been good to very good. If Nia Reed were playing better than Heidi Thelen in practice, then Nia Reed would be starting over Heidi Thelen in matches. The fact that Heidi is starting tells me she is outplaying Nia (plus, Nia really hasn't been a RS/Opp in the matches she has played in, she's been at OH). thanks for posting that, so fast! I'm kinda amazed at Lee's figures because what i felt i was seeing over and over was Michie digging our attacks. It seemed like they were everywhere!
Why did they have to save their good match for us? Dang. Hope it makes us stronger.
Also, thanks for the perspective on Thelen. If we look at our 6 hitters (I'm counting Thelen, Gorrell, Lee, Washington, Frantti, AND Detering), their breadth gives each pf the team a chance to have a bad night or stretch. Look at all the season for all of them...we've had many dry spells that were always balanced against stronger turnouts from another 2-3. They've got each others' backs in that way; let's have theirs.

Thelen is clearly a very good blocker, and most often lines up against the opponent's left side hitter. I am convinced her skill at blocking is a major reason our defense has been so strong this year. On the other hand, she is not a starter, and as such presumably misses the opponents top Left Side, so perhaps I am mistaken about that.
We all have had high hopes for Ms. Reed. However, in limited opportunities, she has not excelled. Moreover, I would guess that if Reed did play, then Lee would have to cover the right side.

In contrast, Rose said his team was unfocused and fuzzy and just simply wasn’t prepared to take on “as good a team as” the Wolverines. The Wolverines, though performing statistically worse than the Lions in some areas, came to play to defend their home territory.
“If you’re not ready to play, or someone doesn’t play well, then you’ll have challenges,” Rose said. “I think we had some challenges. We underperformed and under-coached and received the sort of results you should get when these things happen.”
In the game, Rose said he thought his team’s service pressure wasn’t good enough and offensive struggles from his starters — middle blockers Haleigh Washington and Heidi Thelen — also inhibited the team despite strong performances from outside hitters Simone Lee and Ali Frantti as well as middle blocker Tori Gorrell.
“If we have two or three people struggling offensively, then we’re going to be at a disadvantage,” Rose said. “Every team is different.”

I saw that they were going after Kendall White a few times even though she made some great digs she missed a few. It looked like she was not in position to get to a few of them. She is just a Freshman and will learn from this match.

PSUMaui...totally agree. Not only were they getting the balls to our floor, they seemed to dig so many attacks we dished out. I saw attacks, especially it seemed from Washington, that would be clear winners any other day, that they got a handle on. MI not only was the best team that night, they were far better than earlier in the week...unfortunately.
