Not a peep since the Minnesota game started. I don't blame you all. It's tough getting swept. That's 3 losses in a row and Nebraska is next on the slate. FYI - I started a thread on VT called, "Future of Penn State." Just wanted to bounce some thoughts and ideas off other posters there. There are some people there whose comments are very insightful, and others whose comments are less so. If we lose both Nebraska matches, we could end up with the worst regular season losses record since 1987. I know, the previous comment was too soon. I probably should have waited till tomorrow to post. Hopefully, we can grind through this portion of the schedule and still play competitively in the tournament.

Before the season began, I predicted on VT that Penn State's regular season record would be 23-8. That prediction may have been too optimistic.
FWIW, Jelena Novakovic did not make the trip to Wisconsin/Minnesota.

FWIW, Jelena Novakovic did not make the trip to Wisconsin/Minnesota. I think 23-8 is probably close to being on the mark. My guess would be either 23-8 or 22-9. Interesting about Novakovic. But there could be lots of reasons. Who knows.

Before the season began, I predicted on VT that Penn State's regular season record would be 23-8. That prediction may have been too optimistic. The 2011 season has been singled out as an example of a relatively unsuccessful season. For me, that was the first season I followed PSU end-to-end. I've since gone back and watched a lot of games from earlier seasons--thanks in large part to PSUMAUI's selfless efforts. But getting back to 2011... One thing that helped "then" is that it was difficult to view as many games as we can see today. I didn't get to see the heartbreaking loss to Illinois at Rec Hall. And, I didn't get to see the losses in the Big 4 Tournament. On the other side of the coin, I did have to watch the 5-set loss to Wisconsin that I felt was a harbinger of disappointment to come. Personally, that one really hurt because it followed one of my all-time favorite victories--the 3-1 beatdown of the then #1 Cornhuskers. Perhaps it's my being jaded, but this year's and last year's team doesn't seem to have the same outlook/potential of the 2011 team. I don't get the feeling that things will be better next year. And 2018? Not sure what to expect. Nevertheless, I get good vibes from the players and coaches as far as being people I "like." As much as you can like people through a TV. I don't see my liking the team and hoping for their success decreasing in the future. But I have started to "protect" myself by guarding against irrational exuberance. I'm trying to develop a mindset in which I can enjoy the game for its own sake.

In terms of potential, for me the 2011 team clearly had more -- if only because so many of the key players were underclassmen ( link to 2011 Roster) (listing only players who saw significant playing time): Freshmen Micha Hancock, Nia Grant, Aiyana Whitney, Dom Gonzalez, and Lacey Fuller; Sophomores Deja McClendon, Katie Slay, Ariel Scott and Maddie Martin and Ali Longo, and Junior Kristin Carpenter. It was largely a freshman/sophomore team. This year it's heavily Junior-laden.

I thought Megan Courtney got a lot better from Junior to Senior season? Maybe there is hope for a senior laden class next year?

I agree that the 2014 Class still has potential -- perhaps even alot of potential. But human nature being what it is (or perhaps my human nature being what it is) I think we tend to have greater hopes for improvement from a freshman or sophomore than we do for a junior.

At this point in their careers, the juniors are known quantities. They are not going to get much better or much worse. They are what they are.
We can only hope that the younger players like White and Gorrell continue to improve and the players who will be coming in over the next couple of years pan out.
