The annual team banquet for the 2016 season was held yesterday at the Penn Stater Conference Center. It was a very nice event, with all but two of the players in attendance (don't take anything from the absences -- Wilma Rivera and Jelena Novakovic). Coach Rose announced the team captains for the 2017 season -- Simone Lee, Lainy Pierce and Clare Powers -- and the winner of the Pops Award -- Laura Broerman -- and the winner of the Coach's Award -- Simone Lee.
Coach Rose stressed one theme in his remarks: Everybody cares; everybody works hard, but the question is what are you doing when noone is watching to make yourself better at the things you aren't very good at. Commenting on the loss to Nebraska in the Sweet 16, he said that if someone had told him that his team could have one swing to knock off the number 1 seed on their home court in a sweep, but if they missed that swing they would lose in five, he would take that chance every time. He also said that each class is judged not on how they started, but on how they ended. A not-so-veiled reference to the fact that this year's seniors started their careers on a National Championship team, but they'll be judged on how the team does this season.
I thought the best line of the banquet came from Allison Farrell (every player gives some brief remarks), who started by saying she was nervous, then said she is a communications major, then in a quick aside said "I guess I should probably switch majors."
Final - Pop Quiz: There are only three players in the history of NCAA Women's Volleyball who have been on four consecutive NCAA Championships. Name them.

Coach Rose announced the team captains for the 2017 season -- Simone Lee, Lainy Pierce and Clare Powell -- and the winner of the Pops Award -- Laura Broerman -- and the winner of the Coach's Award -- Simone Lee. Nice, I was wondering if there was anything going on these days. I think it's very interesting that Clare Powell and not Haleigh Washington is a team captain. What's up with that? Also, no setter is named captain.

I was impressed that Powers and Reed spent most of their time on the bench but... 1) were demonstrably supportive from the corner. Seemed to be all about the team. 2) when they went in (and I don't know if they had much warning) they posted stats. Seen over the years times when Coach would send someone in who would be just meh. And the team was so excited at the success of Reed and Powers. There must be some very special chemistry there.
