Returning Talent (Part 3): 2016 Recept/Dig Stats compared with 2012/2013 Recept/Dig Stats We've posted Part 3 of our 3-part series, this time comparing Recept/Dig stats from the 2012 and 2013 seasons, to stats from the 2016 season — in this post, comparing recept/dig stats. Part 1 ( Click Here) compared attack stats and Part 2 ( Click Here) compared blocking stats. Here’s why we’re interested in the comparison. Think back to 2013. Penn State had come oh-so-close to making the NCAA finals in 2012, losing to Oregon, 3-1 in a tough match in which sophomore setter Micha Hancock was injured in the second set, limiting her effectiveness for the rest of the match. In 2013, the Nittany Lions returned almost everyone from that 2012 squad — including Jr. libero Dom Gonzalez, Jr. DS Lacey Fuller, Jr. setter Hancock, Sr. OH Deja McClendon, and So. OH Megan Courtney. That 2013 team built on their experience from the 2012 season to capture the NCAA Title in Seattle, taking down the home town Washington Huskies in a dominating sweep in the Semifinals, and holding off a tenacious and talented Wisconsin team 3-1 in the Finals. Penn State has pretty much everyone back in 2017, too. We’re not predicting an NCAA title for Penn State in 2017, and the point here really isn’t to compare the 2012/2013 players to the 2016 players — although to some extent that’s an inevitable conclusion some will make, given the comparison of their statistics. But it's July, and we were curious. So Click Here for the complete post on DigNittanyVolleyball.com.

Hate to sound like a Volleytalker out of the toolbox, but it's hard to make individual comparisons without having an indication of the number of attempts/opportunities to compare the total number of digs, for example. As someone who's tried to bring statistics to the masses, I know it can be next to impossible to find what critics would like to see in statistics. Those critics are usually smart enough to avoid produce their own statistical analysis. Maybe team comparisons are the easiest/most meaningful when everything isn't available?

I don't see any alternative other than not doing the comparison. Which may yield an equal amount of useful information. But it's July. And I had time.

Here was my takeaway: the 2013 team individual stats were better than 2012. If this means that they were the result of being forged in the proper cauldron, we can hope that the 2016 will be built into a better team as well. So hard to type w/fingers crossed.

One thing that came through to me was that one player was "aced" quite a bit. I'm hoping that she can become a better serve receiver. One thing for sure, if I can notice that weakness you can be pretty sure that other teams will.
We need another national championship--and I don't think I'm being greedy. I want it for the sake of all the PSU detractors out in Volleytalk land. They deserve it so much more than we do.

Looking forward to Lee, Powers, Putnicki, Reed getting their dig numbers to 2012-13 levels. They're capable with our coaching, and reps. We'll see if opponents lay off Frantti this season. She handled well an obscene number of balls on SR.
Still not sure who will be playing LOH. But this is a must to improve the W-L record in conference and overall, and give them a shot at getting to the Final Four and beyond.
