They said Appleman (Yale) is a former PSU assistant. No idea when that was.
They also said this is 18th time Russ has started 7-0

Coach referred repeatedly to the new NCAA rules making it like a country club for the players. Apparently they have to get a day off from training/playing each week. But it sounds like there's more to it than that. Anyone have a comprehensive report on the new rules?

But it sounds like there's more to it than that. Anyone have a comprehensive report on the new rules? There are limits--like practices are limited to 2 hours, a day off, if classes are cancelled; so is practice--that might give Florida teams problems. I'll try to find out more.

Quote from Russ - "Some players come to Penn State because we were good; not because they wanted to be good" He also speaks about changing that mindset and that some players mindset doesn't change. I have seen this conversation with him before about trying to get players to understand what it takes to win a National Championship and that it's tough to get some players to understand that. Does this happen because players today have too many distractions outside of volleyball? Thoughts? Russ Rose interview

I was counting on you, PSUM! thanks!
Coach also predicted a professional career for any/all of Frantti, Lee, Washington.
FLO VB had an interview w/Coach preseason where he spoke more about the distractions: he referred, as example, to players more concerned about their tanning appointments than talking with him [ouch!]. Made me think back to Dom who, from what I heard, kept in constant touch w/Coach.

Well we know it couldn't have been Frantti or Slay that coach was talking about when he spoke about "tanning appts" LOL!

He's referring to the 4 years of this issue he had with Lacey Fuller.

it loads for me; couple hours before Maui's going to be up and at it... sorry!
In the meantime, go to the GOPSUsports site and search for the weekly coach Franklin show. it's audio only. you should be able to reach it that way...it's worth the trouble...

I have seen this conversation with him before about trying to get players to understand what it takes to win a National Championship and that it's tough to get some players to understand that. Does this happen because players today have too many distractions outside of volleyball? Thoughts? Russ Rose interviewHe's gone there before...i think he sees it as his biggest challenge in recruiting and that for some recruits, the biggest distraction may be the process itself. For others, it's possible that they don't love volleyball the way those who are counting on them want them to love it. For kids that went/go to the Juniata and PSU camps, Coach gets a better opportunity to see where they're at. That's how he was so certain of just how good Courtney was going to be in terms of effort and intelligence. I assume that for others that you have to travel to meet, it can be more of a dicey wager. And I don't fault the kids...I don't know how you keep your head on straight being the best player on your team, your district, your region, your state; receiving all the interest from coaches you've seen on TV; your parents supporting/managing you. Focusing on the externalities of the process instead of remembering that this is about a game you love. And there's a bit of a paradox. You're going to a university with all that the origins of the name brings with it...exposure to a whole universe of ideas and disciplines. And I'm sure that can pull some players in other directions. but, part two of the paradox: I remember reading ?A Wilson's? comments in the NYTimes several years back having no idea that Coach was a statistician. Getting a question from the reporter, a light came on about why he does what he does how he does it. Not sure how many players realize there's an entire universe of ideas right there on the practice court, on the team plane, in the office down the hall from the practice gym. How lucky they are to be in this crucible and how much more they can learn than volleyball.
