Thanks a lot Seeya. I especially appreciate that you went the extra mile and listed who and where the players are on each rotation. For me, it makes it easier to visualize. Unbelievable job! Really appreciate this. Really interesting, thank you seeya.

Some talk on VT about returning to a 5-1, but I don't think that makes any sense. Coach Rose playing around a bit with the lineup this weekend seems like a desire to plug in additional players more easily. If I'm Coach Rose, I'm not going to switch out of the modified 6-2 until I get burned, and even then, maybe not? I think the beauty of the modified 6-2 is not inherent, it works because with this system the most gritty players are on the floor at the same time. It's the best system for this team in this moment in time. Players seem to have adapted well.
Thanks for pulling together these stats! Super interesting! Would love to see how these rotations improve/decline in B1G play.

I remember BYU Coach Olmsted using the "we won" speech after the 2014 championship. Sorry, coach, that's not what winning is. I get her point that they made themselves proud. But losers as winners...everybody gets a trophy... But as for the 5-8 OH, asymmetry can make a fight tougher than one would think; just as our short team (ha) v. Stan. Yea, I remember Wisconsin doing that by giving 2nd place rings to all the players in 2013. Second place is 1st loser! Coach Cook's press conference (Monday) about last weekends and this coming weekends matches. I put on my dropbox. You can download if you want or just view on site. Coach Cooks PC on MondayI saw the interview. Thanks for posting. Cook said something very interesting about the 6-2, so I'm posting my reply to this thread. He said that in order for the 6-2 to be a great system, your outside hitters have to pass well, because you cannot substitute as much. He also said because our OH's Lee and Frantti are both physical hitters, passing doesn't have to be perfect.

Coach knows if one of the setters would go down he would be forced back to the 5-1 and wanted to keep it a viable option. The team is playing even better than I expected and has really come together as a team. I think the Huskers are in for a big surprise.

He also said because our OH's Lee and Frantti are both physical hitters, passing doesn't have to be perfect. I haven't been spending my time scoring passes. But casually observing, I thought our passing was much improved this year...interesting since we're playing fewer subs in the back row. This is where (and the dig numbers bear this out) Weis has terrifically improved, and to a lesser extent Frantti and Washington. And with the 6-2 if someone cannot get it to Weis, we have Detering and usually White on the floor as well. The number that stuck out for me was 48 assists for Weis and Detering combined, not counting White or others, in a 3-setter (v CO i think, but not sure). The average for a good setter is 14. You cannot get 16 sets/set with bad passing.

There was a big change this weekend in the rotations. Starting with last weekend Tori Gorrell is playing middle blocker. This weekend, with Nia Reed struggling, Heidi Thelen played right side.
The bigger change was switching the rotation positions of Ali Franti and Simone Lee. That change pairs Franti and Washington in the front row for two rotations (White and Detering serving) with Lee in the back row. With Abby serving the team has a strong block (Franti, Washington, Thelen) and a versatile attack given Simone’s back row attack prowess combined with Ali and Haleigh in the front.
The best rotation to date has been when Kendall is serving. The change brings the same back row attack potential to that rotation but may weaken it's side out stats. Statistically the team has been a better side out team when Ali is in the back row. I don’t have any first-pass data, but I assume that Ali probably has better serve reception numbers than Simone. So, if PSU sticks with this new setup, it will be interesting to see how the new rotations perform when receiving serve.
Every rotation is impacted by the switch.

Last year when Thelen was first shipped off to Opp, she struggled. This year, in or out of it, she seems very comfortable. Lot of growth.

Really off topic but Annika Albrecht, a former walk-on, led Nebraska in kills against Wisconsin with 18. Have we ever had a player who initially walked-on lead the team in kills during a Big Ten match?

define walk-on. E.g., i think Halterman may in fact be a walk-on, which i always understood was someone not recruited who showed up at start of practice schedule.
She's the only one i know of who was not recruited (if I my hunch is correct). All others were recruited and committed to PSU (t/fs excluded), usually years in advance.
Or do you mean non-scholarship player?
