Now we know what Haleigh can do when the back row players give a decent pass to a setter. The problem will come right back as we face the better teams in the conference. I wish I had the best answer but it seems that the players who have the best back row attack are the problem to our passing issues. Coach will try finesse our strategy to handle each opponent. Of course we know you can't hide all our pin hitters and Haleigh when they are in the back row. It compromises Kendall's effectiveness trying to cover for other players as well as her own area to protect.
Even though we have improved our team defense the other teams have surprisingly done so also. We seem to have one of the shorter teams now in the conference and it will not make our journey any easier. Still I remain optimistic that Coach will find a way to win the close matches.

PSU from 2007 through 2014 was a power team--they knew their opponent knew where they were going with the ball and they pretty much rammed it down their throats. PSU can't do that any more. Seems like Coach Rose has developed a team who's chief strength is its flexibility--sometimes it goes with the middles, sometimes it's Simone and Ali, and other times its Detering, Morrell, and Thelen--or all sorts of permutations and combinations. As parity grows in volleyball, this is likely the way things will be for the foreseeable future.

The offense is more complex than in the past. Washington and Thelen switch off at RS, the girls run parallel patterns freezing the block, the middles dive through much harder on sets to the OH, the back row is varying positions working to cover the tip. The back row attack is featured more than ever, and both OHs hav several swings from the right. Really has to make it hard on the opponents. I have been impressed at how willing the coaches have been to change and adjust. We have some weaknesses but it is clear that the staff is constantly trying to get better match ups.

Coach referenced the issue about the limit on substitutions during a set (in press comments last week), and I think that is figuring in this year more than previous years. Our 6-2 eats up substitutions (less so during sets when we go on a serving run somewhere). But last week there was a set where it was successive sideouts by both teams. That forces us to keep those fabulous back row attackers in, even with their acknowledged passing issues. Question: is this a conundrum, an irony, or quandary?
