Article from NCAA website. Paragraph 4 may not be true anymore after tonight's MN/PU match! Nearly 80 days ago, the women’s volleyball season kicked off with a bang when Florida upended No. 1 Texas in four sets. Since then, it’s been a rollicking ride, but the regular season is reaching its end soon, which means things are going to start getting dramatic as stakes get higher. Let’s take a look at a few of the best storylines from around the country as we near tournament season: 1. Who will stop Penn State? Or, really, the question could be can anyone stop Penn State? The Nittany Lions haven’t been ranked No. 1 for weeks by accident: they’ve lost just once this year (to a very talented Nebraska team) and are currently riding a 14-match win streak. They haven’t dropped two sets in a month. They handed Stanford two of its three losses this season. They have seven ranked wins. They haven’t lost on the road or at neutral sites. Intro to the VT post: Below are the current version of the Pablo Ultimate Rankings (PUR). Recall that the goal of PUR is to create a ranking that does the best job possible of reflecting winners of matches that have already been played. The table shows the team's rating, and then range, which is the range of ratings the team could have and still give the same overall quality of the ranking (in terms of overall number of matches correctly reflected). Within that context, team ratings are optimized by using their regular Pablo ratings, but the overriding criteria is the maximum number of winners. Just another example of a terrific person who is a product of this program. I am told a number of past alumni are in town, many of which were at yesterdays spirited practice.

Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71346/pablo-ultimate-rankings#ixzz4y7BD21IzI find this ranking/algorithm puzzling. I believe it's "rearward" looking in that it attempts to explain a teams record to date--its wins and losses. Consequently, explaining PSU's only loss means that Nebraska has to have a better ranking than PSU--even though it has three more losses. To some extent, I don't really care about a rating that explains what has been. After all, what matters more? Explaining why PSU beat Michigan, or what their chances are of defeating Wisconsin again and Minnesota?

PSU (everywhere) and Nebraska (at home) are playing the best volleyball in the country to date.
Ill take the "everywhere" anytime of the week and twice on Sunday.

It reminds me of a colleague who, while working on his doctorate in computer science, had been part of a project to predict weather. Using the then-state of the art computing power (late 1980s) they were able to predict the weather six days out, but it took seven days of computing time to do it.

Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71346/pablo-ultimate-rankings#ixzz4y7BD21IzSo, I was trying to figure this out exactly and here's the 'splanations I got (just an FYI, in case others were wondering). ME: Would you mind explaining what the PUR does? Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71346/pablo-ultimate-rankings?page=2&scrollTo=1729609#ixzz4yXv9IUXUProfessorPlum:I think it predicts who will beat who with an 87.3% accuracy looking in the review mirror. It also factors in HCA. So some find it as an interesting tool to predict what’s going to happen going forward and some use it as a quasi ranking. The biggest issue with treating it as a ranking is that many of the bad losses and big wins are outside of the 87.3% accuracy and are basically not accounted for. That’s it in laymens terms...I’m sure that statistics nerds on here will give a more scientific explanation Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71346/pablo-ultimate-rankings?page=2&scrollTo=1729609#ixzz4yXvCfwBWn00b:Ranking the teams to minimize the number of "upsets" that have occurred (taking into account the home court advantage). Read more: volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71346/pablo-ultimate-rankings?page=2&scrollTo=1729609#ixzz4yXvFmRHRBofa on the Sofa (Pablo):There is nothing "scientific" about it. All it does is try to do the best job possible of reflecting who has won in matches that have been played. Home teams have an advantage, so add in the HCA for home teams and compare ratings. The winning team will be higher rated 87.3% of the time. That's the best I can do. If you don't like the results, all it says is that this is not a good way to rank teams. I wouldn't argue with you, which is why I don't promote PUR as anything but an exercise in FYI. Picks by Voepel and Friedman on who they are predicting to win NC this year:
Mechelle Voepel: "Wow, two seasons have passed without Penn State in the volleyball final four. What's going on? We jest, of course, but it's a tribute to the Nittany Lions' amazing past decade: six NCAA titles between 2007 and 2014. After regional-semifinal losses the past two seasons, Penn State is loaded with experience, led by seniors Simone Lee, Haleigh Washington, Ali Frantti, Abby Detering and Heidi Thelen. Penn State has beaten defending champ Stanford twice, and its lone loss was to Big Ten rival Nebraska in September. The regular-season finale at Minnesota is a great test before the NCAA tournament."
Vicki L. Friedman: "Despite the No. 7 ranking from the NCAA on Wednesday night, it's hard to call Texas, which has been to five straight final fours, the underdog. Yet the Longhorns have an under-the-radar presence because they don't play in the Big Ten or Pac-12. They've advanced to the past two NCAA championships, but I'm betting on this senior-laden Texas team taking home its first title since 2012. Seniors Chiaka Ogbogu, Ebony Nwanebu and Cat McCoy want to make a statement in their final season, sophomore Micaya White leads a balanced attack, and outside hitter Lexi Sun might be the best freshman in the country."
Who they almost picked:
Mechelle Voepel: "One of these years, it has to be Florida's turn for an NCAA title, right? The Gators have made the final four seven times, and the championship match once, falling to USC in 2003. Multidimensional hitter Carli Snyder and fellow senior Rhamat Alhassan at middle blocker hope to take the Gators a step further than they've ever been. This year, Florida has defeated Texas and Nebraska, with the only loss to Kentucky in SEC play on Oct. 15. For the most part, the Gators have been the titans of the SEC, and they got their revenge against the Wildcats on Wednesday with a sweep in Lexington, Kentucky."
Vicki L. Friedman: "Since Stanford figured it out after a bumpy ride last season, the Cardinal have been near perfect, so much so that it's hard to see Stanford not repeating as national champions. With Kathryn Plummer as the hammer and Morgan Hentz's ability to keep a rally alive, there are plenty of reasons to put another check in the box next to Stanford. The fact that the Cardinal are unbeaten in a Pac-12 that rivals the Big Ten for depth makes Stanford an even more imposing contender."
