This team is going to get a lot of ouchies and boo-boos over the next couple of months. I'm afraid they will get their first one tomorrow when they face Stanford.

I was at the match and will post a writeup tomorrow including post-match quotes from Coach Rose. The bottom line: he thought Haleigh and Simone hit well, and Heidi blocked well. Other than that, he wasn't happy with the overall team play.

Defense was very inconsistent...good for a few points, then chaos breaks out, several bad points in a row, like they lose their concentration or intensity or something. I would expect Stanford to take advantage of that inconsistency and chaos and go on multi point runs. Appears that Lutz had a big night again Illinois, as did their other hitters, they will be tough to stop unless PSU is at the top of its game and plays much more consistently. Will take something special to avoid the first loss of the season tomorrow night.

Blocking technique could be better and will be better. But I think she's going to be good and she has a nice court presence. A little more confidence, she could be a Fatima Balza kind of player. Holcomb I think will be the answer at libero -- though Lainy Pierce might be a factor when she returns. Holcomb very good fundamental technique and is very athletic -- just needs exposure to more college serving and more time with this team but I think she'll probably be a big time player. Weiskircher had some nice moments and did some nice things serving and at the net. Setting was all over the place though -- just did not have any rapport with the outsides at all. There were a few really nice sets so I think there is something to build on. Frantti seemed kind of out of it but I might be misreading -- she might have been so keyed up for the first match, big home crowd. She and Whitney did both hit better in the 3rd set, so maybe it was just butterflies. Lee was terrific. She looked very assured out there, looked like the upperclassman, hit some very smart balls. Lee might be kind of a natural leader. I hope they can get her on the court more this year. Courtney I thought played pretty consistently but was not set very well. I do think it's possible they'll play a lot better tomorrow night. They could play quite a bit better and still get swept. There is a lot of work to do. Seems similar to 2011 when they weren't sure about setter and libero early.

We've posted our write-up of the Colorado match. Here's the link: Penn State Manages Win Over Travel-Weary Colorado.
Here are a couple of key quotes from Coach Rose after the match:
I think it's fair to say he wasn't happy with the performance of several of his players.

Attendance-related question: Rec Hall looked pretty full for last night's game, but the Box Score attendance figure was ~ 3,100. Do they let in people for free that aren't counted? Over the years I've sorta kept track of how the crowd "looks" and the official attendance figures and there appears to a disconnect.

I think the attendance for Villanova was about 3700.

Expecting a 6,000+ crowd, like the 2011 AVCA game is probably a bridge too far.
Have fun tonight!

There were flashes of Penn State Volleyball in that match, but of course I am spoiled from the past several years. They will come around. When you say "they" could you be a little more specific. It seems to me like at least 3 players need to make significant improvement if they hope to make the FF.
