nyline Good valuation. We take for gospel some of the rankings but votes are often given personally sight unseen by the voters D'Errico is an example of a player who was a very significant factor for PSU vb.
The club scene is filled with coaching that may not be very strong and then when some of these girls get to college and deal with talented coaching their abilities blossom(not a pun)

Nyline, I didn’t intend for my opinion to be so upsetting to you. You did see I said, “Of course there are plenty of exceptions.” I should amend my word “helping” you focused on to “being a critical component.” And there will be exceptions to that also. I am well aware of some late bloomers. The example that sticks out in my mind is Karsta Lowe. I remember she didn’t make her high school varsity team starting roster until her junior year. She was a walkon for UCLA because no DI school offered her a scholarship. Then in her junior year of college everything came together and she went on to become a superstar. I do appreciate the effort you put into finding those links and will look at every one of them. Your opinion didn't upset me at all. You are entitled to your opinion and I think it's fine to express it. I simply thought your opinion (that it's highly unlikely that non-top 50-ranked players will help their teams win a national championship) wasn't accurate, and I thought the best way to demonstrate that was with facts. It's a complicated topic, so it took me a number of posts to provide the facts I think make the point effectively. I'm glad you appreciated the links, but in truth, it wasn't hard to find them (if you're referring to the ones I think you're referring to) because, for most of them, I had written the articles and posted them on DigNittanyVolleyball.com.

Just one last point. The discussion was about OHs and that was the context of my initial comment. Yes, I understand DSs, serving specialists, and liberos often don’t make it into the top 50 senior aces. Those positions were not the focus of my comment but yes, needless to say, they "help" a team. Fair enough. That focus wasn't clear to me in reading your post, but I think the distinction is valid, and it seems we agree that back row players "help" their teams. BTW, we totally agree on Karsta Lowe, who is featured in the first of my articles I linked to: www.dignittanyvolleyball.com/what-penn-state-might-be-getting-with-its-2018-senior-aces-71-allyson-cathey/Here's what I wrote about Karsta Lowe:

don't worry, I won't call. Maybe an "old-timer" like Tillie might know off the top of her head? Possibly Kristin Carpenter in 2010? On a totally different note, she had an interview by a student at PSU that was absolutely hysterical. Carp was Gatorade POY in VA her senior HS year.
