I may be incorrect, but suspect that the divergence of opinions on hiring a former PSU player is based on differing expectations as to which position is being filled. If we are seeking a new Associate head coach, and hence presumably someone who could take over if Russ retires, then prior coaching experience will be an important factor.
As to Airesfyr's suggestion that a current assistant might be promoted, then that would be two changes. The "promotee" would have to be evaluated for the new role (eg: heir apparent) and the replacement assistant considered on the basis of different criteria.

Coach Rose might be more comfortable working with someone he knows from their years as a player. But I think first and foremost, he would want to be convinced that they would be a good coach. Dennis did not play at Penn State. Steve Aird did. Personally, I think Dennis has done more for the Penn State program than Steve Aird did -- even accounting for different lengths of tenure. Blair Brown was a great player. I don't know that she is a great coach (I also don't know that she is not a great coach). Kristin Carpenter exemplified spunk and competitiveness. I don't know whether she is, or is not, a great coach.

I was never looking at carp as a head coach right now. Just one of the few assistants if she decided to come back. Now outside of psu I would love for Haley to come over but I don’t think will for reasons I previously stated. The only way I could see that happening is if roses retirememt is imminent. Don’t see Haley sitting around for years waiting. I would love if it did happen though cause I think chance would increase of Lanier comming. She would have her coach and wouldn’t have to sit a year leaving pac.
Man, Rockwell’s retirement really has stirred things up quite a bit. Only issue I would see here is I think Haley is older then rose. 74 I think. Do u want to hire a coach that old long term to have stability with a program u can’t cintinually run through coaches.

1. in the beginning...there were only about 2 associate head coaches nationwide. suddenly, after Salima had been the first, every team needed one. So much for that distinction. It got to the point that relatively inexperienced people (including, but meaning no offense to, Adam Hughes) were given the title. Talk about grade inflation!!
2. I think PSU can have more coaches, but should use great care and selectivity in making someone AHC. Dennis has loads of experience -- including being on teams that won it all. Not many former assistant coaches out there with multiple rings and experience as HC. If I were in the decisionmaker seat, if I wanted an AHC, I'd choose Dennis or someone else with that breadth of experience and winning. For an AHC position, that rules out all former players except perhaps Kaleena, who may have no interest in returning. If an additional AC is a better fit, wow! Lots of formers currently coaching to choose from including D'Arrico, Carp, Brown, Wilson, Dom.

Hughes got a lot of experience when at other schools before PSU an although relatively young demonstrated a deep understanding of the game when here. Now the challenge is to sell himself and Carp to the batch of new possibilities every year.
Dennis has had good experience but I am not sure that the stint in Virginia added much to his resume. Never know why he left there but not sure that his 5 years added distinction to his resume.

Can anyone post PSU's 2018 recruiting class rank from PrepVB (only PSU, mind you)? I assume they were # 1, but wanted to verify.

1. PENN STATE: Gabby Blossom, 5-10 S, St. Joseph’s Academy (St. Louis, Missouri); Allyson Cathey, 6-1 OH, New Albany (Indiana); Serena Gray, 6-2 MB, Temple City (California); Jenna Hampton, 5-7 libero, Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Florida); Brooklyn Hill, 5-8 libero, Rancho Cucamonga (California); Kaitlyn Hord, 6-4 MB, Henry Clay (Lexington, Kentucky); Jonni Parker, 6-0 S/OH, Miami East (Casstown, Ohio); Amanda Phegley, 6-4 MB, Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Florida)
Nyline edit: It's fine to list the rankings of the Penn State (but not other team's) players. However, copying the commentary from the article is a violation of PrepVolleyball.com's copyright, so I've deleted it.

I count eight players. So how many players on the roster for 2018.
I have seen Serena Gray play. I don't think she will start as a freshman but big upside potential. She will be very good.
