Kat Cather, 6-2 Sr. RS/Opp, and Allison Farrell, 5-6 Jr. DS, are no longer listed on the Penn State website's roster. Cather, who transferred from Mississippi for the 2017 season, never played for the Nittany Lions. She had suffered a concussion while at Mississippi and appeared to have some kind of injury at the start of the 2017 season (she wore dark glasses at a few matches, which suggests that the injury may have been a concussion or other head injury). Regardless, she may have simply retired from the sport -- no announcement from Penn State, and we wouldn't expect one. As to Farrell, she played very sparingly during her two seasons on the team, so she may simply have moved on to other things. Assuming all the Freshmen and Taylor Leath show up as anticipated, and there are no more transfers in or out, that leaves 16 players on the team for 2018. We've updated DigNittany's 2018 PSU Roster (Unofficial) and the DigNittany Player Matrix to reflect these changes.

That's one of the smaller (in terms of numbers) rosters that PSU has had in some time. Right?

I have no idea what's behind that -- and based on past seasons, Coach Rose still might add players. But if things don't change, this team will have fewer players than in the recent past (but as many or more than many other teams).

So, in terms of there being no obvious right side for this season, what do you think they are going to do? Leath or Reed are possibilities, but I was thinking possibly Gorrell! She has a pin-hitter type swing, and they did the same thing with Thelen. That would also open up spots for the multiple incoming middles.

Gorrell would be one possibility, as would Jonni Parker and Amanda Phegley. I think Leath is more an OH as is Reed. Purely as a guess, I'd think Parker or Phegley, in that order. Do not wager money based on my guess.

I am sure things will shake out in the preseason, and coach will put the best player for the position there. If I had to make a guess I would say Reed or Parker.

I recall that Gorrell played a little at RS last season but did not do so well. I also recall thinking that, after the first couple of matches, our best RS was a setter. That changed as the season went along and Thelan got more confidence and played better. My thought is that someone may grow into the role as the season progresses, and the position might not be set until well into the season.
