We've posted an interview with Russ Rose, after the second day of preseason practice, in which he talks about this year's freshman class, classes from 40 years ago, voting in the AVCA polls, parity in D1 women's volleyball, the importance of experience in determining which team will win, and what makes leaders (and who have been some of the great leaders on Coach Rose's teams). Here's the link: www.dignittanyvolleyball.com/russ-rose-talks-preseason-and-polls-with-dignittany/And here's an excerpt:

Thanks Nyline.
When Coach Rose talked about players "wanting to get in the fray with you," did he mean fight with him or fight along with him (against the opponent)?

It sounded to me as if Russ was talking in the third person from the standpoint of how a team's "leader(s)" affect other players on that team.

Damn! It's always a third way!

Some times the most talented skill wise do not fit into the "TEAM". Some people fit into the fray because they have admiration for the dedication shown in the ways that most count: taking a drill and putting 100% into sets a pace that those seeking to be "part of the fray" become infected with that attitude and leap into participating. It is what boils in them. They are the 100% per centers. It is where the action is and they are "part of it" never considering who is leading, who is getting notice: just DID WE WIN?

So just curious if anyone thinks grey has potential to be converted to pin. Ariel Scott was a middle and converted to OH I think and we saw what happened there. Scott was 6’5 and grey is only 6’2 but curious if she could be effective on outside also. Btw asked before and never got answer, what ever happened to Scott. Always thought she had potential to make some noise with national team. Did she not make it or just decide she was done with volleyball after college or what? I remember Scott being pretty automatatic. Might be last OH that was that for psu. Psu has had some other strong OH I’m just referring to the type of player when it went to her u just knew it was a point most the time.

Thanks Nyline. I enjoyed the interview. It seemed like Coach took the long view of things (again). I suppose anyone who teaches must adjust with the times in order to remain effective.

A. Scott was one of my favorites. I loved how Micha or Dom would set her to put an end to an opponent's rally. Whitney used to have flashes when she reminded me of Scott.
Here's hoping there's a "clone" among the incoming players.
