Excited about grey and hord. That’s the second underperforming match in a row for Leath
Leath and Reed had subpar hitting percentages. However, I think that opens up opportunities for the freshman, which they clearly took advantage off.
Keep in mind that Leath more than adds to her game via her passing and defensive contributions. Reminds me of Frantti a bit.
Fortunately, IMO we have a deep bench. I'm curious to see how we do against the likes of Stanford next weekend and against the top B1G opponents.

We really need to become more efficient in our hitting if we want to compete against the top opponents, although I'm please with our serve-receive passing and defense.

This freshman class, thus far in the early portion of this season, is more impressive than the freshman class of 2014. The class as a whole I can agree with although Washington was a beast the moment she first stepped on floor ...as was Frantti

I just wanted to be clear that my comment was meant as a generalization of each class' contribution to the team as a whole and NOT a comparison of individual talent.
2014 was a special year and I don't want to detract from that. Also, it's still very early in 2018.

I think Coach did a great job working in as many players as he could and still getting the wins. The freshmen are exciting to watch but we need to work on our serving. Go Lions. Maybe Micha can offer a clinic? I'll ask her if she has the time to hold a clinic.

Lee was a great player by end of career but freshman year she didn’t play much. You were referring to how the two classes as whole started. I was just referring to individual players

But the 2014 group was impactful early. The team will be tested much more next week. Should be a learning experience.

Bryanna is doing a great job as a player and a leader. I have been a fan of hers since she started. She has had quite a journey and I think is a perfect example for the new players to follow. By the way that diving set in set 2 against A&M was fantastic!

I think we have been spoiled by so many years as the most efficient hitting team in the country. It is possible to succeed with a lower hitting percentage if you defend well. It is easier to defend if you serve tough. So far at least I think that explains part of what is happening.

The differential in hitting percentage is a good rule-of-thumb. I've also noticed that team blocking around (or better than) 3 blocks/set is a good indicator of success. Going back and looking at cumulative stats for past PSU teams can give a person a good idea what to look for, as can going to the NCAA pages to get additional perspective.

Agreed. I am also looking at opponents' percentage. Taking into account early competition, it feels like we will have one of our better blocking teams, which will help with back row success too.

We were in Happy Valley for the weekend and enjoyed attending both the Temple and TX A&M games. Temple looked liked a much better team than A&M, so I was surprised to read that A&M swept Temple. Shows how little I know and how different every game is.
After the thriller at Beaver Stadium, we had to rush to Rec Hall to catch the first serve of the A&M game. I thought the team played great and I love my Russ Rose gnome! Enjoyed seeing the large group of volleyball alums. Great evening.

Thanks for sharing your on site observations. Nothing really compares to attending in person.
A&M was playing their second game in a matter of hours. That may have had an impact on A&M's performance. We also played A&M last year, and saw a couple of their best players. Perhaps that helped us to prepare. I noticed that the A&M setter dump was less devastating this season whereas last year, she was killing us with that.

Last year was somewhat of a mirror-image of this year's match: We played a very tough night match against Stanford (3-1, but really a battle), with a not-so-deep team, and then turned around and had to play TAMU in the afternoon the next day. And you're absolutely right -- TAMU's setter seemed to score at will against us with the dump last season. This season, it wasn't a surprise.
