Ethan Kasales, who has written for The Collegian and for Onward State, will be posting match writeups and post-match quotes for us on DigNittanyVolleyball.com throughout this season -- and particularly while I am away from September 10th through October 2nd. He is a real pro, and a terrific person. He's posted his first writeup with post match quotes for the TAMU match. Here's the link: www.dignittanyvolleyball.com/penn-state-sweeps-texas-am-with-post-match-quotes/Please give Ethan a warm welcome. Nyline

Welcome Ethan. I like your write-ups. Will you be traveling to the West Coast?

How do you measure hard and heart or chemistry? They are favorite expressions but when do you know? Or is knowing reserved for those on the court? I recall Russ saying once that he did not know how to describe the essence of team solidarity but he knew it when he saw it

I think coach Rose is one of the best at getting his kids to play hard and with heart (I think he calls it "grit").
Chemistry IMO is another issue. I think it has more to do with how well the player's personalities mesh and how well they communicate; leadership is very important for this.

Those two quotes stood out to me also. Gray, Parker and Cathey are all very poised and thoughtful.

I agree with the observation. I recall some coaches who did not let Freshmen talk to the media. Obviously these ladies are ready to do that tricky thing early in their careers.
On the court chemistry is knowing what your teammates can do and will do, and relying on that. It takes some time for a setter to know where the hitters really want the ball, the defensive players have to know who is going to dive for the ball between the zones, etc. Once chemistry is fully developed, each player does better because decision making becomes instinctive. Chemistry is a key component in all team sports.
However off court chemistry is also important especially in college where players have to maintain good grades, or to get comfortable in a new situation. It looks like Serena is describing off court circumstances. The on court chemistry has markedly improved from the first matches to this weekend. I hope the progress will continue.
