‘The Names,’ by America’s poet laureate, Billy Collins, about the 2,792 who died on 9-11-01. Here are its closing lines “Names etched on the head of a pin. One name spanning a bridge, another undergoing a tunnel. A blue name needled into the skin. Names of citizens, workers, mothers, and fathers, The bright-eyed daughter, the quick son. Alphabet of names in a green field. Names in the small tracks of birds. Names lifted from a hat Or balanced on the tip of the tongue. Names wheeled into the dim warehouse of memory. So many names, there is barely room on the walls of the heart.”

Thanks for this post. Read it at work in NYC today at the same desk I was at fourteen years ago today.

I never made it to my office that day. My cab heading downtown on the FDR was going to be redirected to Brooklyn, so I jumped out at Brooklyn Bridge, got close to my office at Maiden Lane, then walked over to Broadway and Fulton, just as the second tower fell.

You were a lot closer than me. I work on the UES. I do remember walking from the subway past a fire station on 75th and having no idea yet what the trucks being scrambled for.

I was not working at that time, had elementary school aged kids. My mom called me and asked if I had been watching TV and I watched in horror the rest of the day. We live in eastern PA.

Just didn't want the day to go by without acknowledging the tremendous horror, loss, and heroism of sixteen years ago. I'm always aware of the anniversary, but I flew out of LaGuardia this morning so it was especially prominent in my thoughts.
