Minny beat us in every category: points, hitting average, aces, blocks, assists, and digs. I have to believe Russ is a little disappointed in this match after Oregon beat Minny.

Last night I hope they take as a learning experience and move forward. Are we talking about the coaches or the players? When you play as many freshmen as we do you have to expect freshmen mistakes.

Coach is smart enough to know his chances of beating teams like Stanford, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska on their home courts were slim to none with this young team.
Don't forget >90% of our offense graduated last year. That's a lot to put on the freshmen. I believe they will continue to improve as the season progresses. I don't think we'll make any final fours this year. I'll be happy if we make it into the elite eight.

Not so fast Millenium, our two freshmen middles are playing outstanding volleyball and the back row players are playing well also. Our outside hitters were a complete disaster and cost us the match. Our munchkin hitters are at a huge disadvantage against the bigger teams like the Gophers, Huskers, and Badgers. The setter could not run an accurate set to the hitters quickly enough to score points. I think we should definitely move one of the middles to the left side and give Gabby more playing time. Currently our offense is so predictable that the Gophers knew what we were doing before we did. Our saving grace at making the sets competitive was due to our middles and back row players.
PS - Even though we don't show the 2018 stats it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see which players are having a great year and the other players who are not getting the job done.

Bob: I'll apologize for the slacker staff's not providing current statistics. They're is a state of flux (the staff, not the stats). Hopefully they'll return to what was normal after 2 October. If you want to see 2018 Stats, you can go to the team website: gopsusports.com/index.aspx?path=wvball and check them out. I'm sure everyone would appreciate your analysis of what the stats show.

PS - Even though we don't show the 2018 stats it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see which players are having a great year and the other players who are not getting the job done. I am not so sure that the issue is the size of the hitters. Many shorter hitters have had success through the years, and our outsides seem reasonably tall. Thus I must respectfully dispute the "munchkin" characterization. I am also not convinced that changing setters would make much sense at this time. While we all have high hopes for Gabby, we must certainly recognize that Coach has never hesitated to change setters if he thinks the team will do better, or even might do better. So the only logical conclusion is that, for the moment, Weiskercher gives us the best chance to succeed. I do agree that Minny quickly adjusted to our attack and dug a high percentage of our swings. But I wonder if that was really because our attack was predictable. For example, I recall that we tried Parker out of right back for some swings, had several setter dumps, lots of tips (some due to poor setter/hitter communication), had left hitters attack from the right side, and even a couple lucky kills off scrambles. My observation is that Minny ran their systems better than we did. Minny's middles got where they needed to be so we even had some trouble scoring through the middle. We do know that this is very much of a team game. A great pass opens up setter choices, makes for easier sets, and a cleaner attack opportunity. It also helps when more than one player is in position to attack and moves to do so, even if she does not get the ball. When any aspect of that sequence is less than perfect, it is harder to score.

Let's just confine our "f" words to those containing both an L and an X.

I'm going to be posting my comments on the Minnesota vs Penn State match on VT tonight.
Is that an indication this message board is failing? Most sports fans are motivated to comment in response to something they disagree with. Here there is little diversity of opinion and little incentive for discussion other than to agree with one another.

I don't think so. If anything, I pretty sure that traffic has been steadily going up each year.
For most matches I post here. However, for the really big matches I'll post on VT (during the match). And sometimes I find myself posting on both boards during a match.
During the week, though, it's hard to find PSU inside info on VT, unless someone from here posts it.

I don't have access to the data that show traffic on the site--Nyline does. I recall that last year, Nyline said that traffic on the site was quite high during the volleyball season--and that it had grown since the site's founding in 2015. Hopefully, Nyline can address the amount of activity on the site upon his return. I'd be interested.

Bob.do I read you right that our setter is the problem as suggested by your idea of switching setters with Minnesota? Could you identify the specifics in regard to our setting shortcomings?

You are probably right but I still have a feeling that if we could have swapped setters with Minny we would have won. Sellinger-Swenson may be the best setter in the NCAA this year. On the other hand, Minny has some very talented players besides her. We should not forget that our current setter played a huge role on a finals team last year. We like to talk about connectedness on this site. It takes some time to find that when out of system. The chemistry will improve as the season moves forward.

It's definitely time to rearrange the deck chairs but the coaches have no answers.
