I formed the same impression. What we saw against Michigan was more in system play, so sets were better and swings were timed right, so only 10 balls hit out (6 of the hitting errors were blocks). Again, with national announcers, we got better info. Apparently Michigan's coach demands that his servers keep the ball in (apparently, he makes an exception for his one jump server).
As a general matter, we have had issues getting the ball down on out of system plays. Sunderland and Fortner kept talking about the percentage of digs which lead to kills. A very interesting way to think about things.
Our hitters will continue to improve the out of system swings which will often be opposed by well formed blocks. So high hands, hard wrist aways, tooling for block hit errors, or the ever complicated intentional soft block/save for a free ball.
But maybe coach just meant he would start one middle instead of the other. We will very likely never know.

Maybe that's what coach meant when he mentioned in a interview (after last weekend's losses) that they had identified the problem and made changes.
The impression I got from his comments was that the problem he identified was not something that could be addressed with a quick fix.
I think you're right for the most part. Also, I like what Elliot said above.
My take on coach's comments was that we'll be seeing steady improvements over the next couple weeks (as the newbies gain experience).

Fortner said more than once that the team we see at the end of the season wont look like what we are seeing now. Players progress at different speeds. We are still figuring out how to put the players in the best positions to succeed.
