Illinois just beat Wisconsin 3-1. I think this match (and the previous one between the two teams) highlights an important point about volleyball and sports in general: Ten days ago, Wisconsin beat Illinois at Illinois, 3-1: uwbadgers.com/news/2018/10/3/volleyball-dang-dana-sophomore-has-career-night-to-lead-badgers-past-illini.aspx?path=wvball. Last night, Illinois beat Wisconsin at Wisconsin, 3-1: uwbadgers.com/news/2018/10/13/volleyball-badgers-fall-short-in-hard-fought-battle-with-illini.aspxI would bet that after that first match, Badger fans (like Penn State fans last night and this morning) were exhuberant and looking forward to a successful season in which their team would prevail over all, or almost all, obstacles. And Illinois fans were not feeling so great -- maybe not morose, but not exhuberant. I would also bet that after last night's match, Illinois fans (like Penn State fans last night and this morning) were exhuberant and looking forward to a successful season in which their team would prevail over all, or almost all, obstacles. And Badger fans were not feeling so great -- maybe not morose, but not exhuberant. One of the truisms of sports, often invoked by Joe Paterno, is that (generally speaking) you are not as bad as you look when you lose, and you are not as good as you look when you win. I think that probably holds true for both Penn State and Nebraska after last night's match. Coach Rose nailed it (shocking, right? Coach Rose with an incredibly on-point and insightful comment) with this from last night's post-match presser:

Oh, we know Nyline. After the OSU loss, I've been in the dungeon looking through a little hole at the sky. LOL!
Realistically speaking, I don't think many PSU fans had the expectation that we'd be competing for a natty this year, but we can and should celebrate the little and big wins this year.
So, what I'm saying is that I won't let go of my exhuberance at beating Nebraska, even though they had better stats in almost every category. No sir!!
I'm going hold on to them bragging rights for a week or two, and let HuskerJen know at the appropriate time (she's been harping about Nebraska having PSU's number).
PS - I always love reading them Russ Rose quotes.

Here's a good one from post-Nebraska match: “The results are the results. We won a match against a good opponent tonight. We’re glad that we had such great support from the fans. I thought the kids played really hard. It wasn’t a perfect match, but we dug a lot of balls and we got great contributions from a lot of people that hadn’t played a lot. We’ll get back to work on Monday.”
