Thanks for our quarter-week VB fix Ethan. Much obliged.

I thought it was interesting that Gabby Blossom said that her biggest weakness coming into the season was defense. I would wager that that is one of the reasons that Coach Rose is playing her as a DS periodically; because he knows that next year she will need to be better at defense when she is setting.

I think you're spot on.
Wasn't it Bryanna who said a while back that setters don't normally like to play defense? At the college level and in the pros, however, it's a must for a good setter.

This is an interesting thought. Coach has been pretty consistent in interviews that he tries to win every match. So it would be surprising to me if, in a close match, he would ever put in a player who was less capable than someone else just to get them ready for the next or future seasons. In my opinion, putting Blossom and Sciora in at critical junctures of the Nebraska match demonstrated that he believes both were ready to do the job, and provided something that would (and did) help the team win. I do recall being surprised to see them in the fifth set, and pleased at what they were able to accomplish. To your point though, Blossom's improved defense will be essential to the team's future success.

Hey Elliotberton. I would disagree with you a bit. I think that Coach will put people in at certain spots to help them develop. He's looking toward the tournament not necessarily looking to win as many games as possible on the way. I remember Phil Jackson putting players in games so that they could get experience at the cost of mistakes that would be made while they were getting experience. Not saying that Blossom wasn't ready for the Nebraska game, but I doubt that she was earlier on. Also, I wonder if someone like Brooklyn Hill might still be a better DS that Blossom is right now. Course, Coach may want Blossom in because she can set OOS balls. Who knows. I'm guessing at his motivation which I'm sure is not completely accurate, or even remotely close

Of course jojonito may well be correct. But then I wonder why we are not seeing more of Phegley or Cathey? Both have shown good potential in limited opportunities, and like the other young players, could do with some more time in matches. Yet neither is getting subbed in with regularity. Instead, it looks like both are being called upon when the team needs a change of pace or shot in the arm.
As to Brooklyn Hill, I recall Coach mentioning something about her needing to regain her confidence. While I am certainly not qualified to judge, Blossom seems to brim with confidence and energy. (Apparently, she also needs to be kept away from microphones in matches, but that is a separate question).
Over the years it has been my observation that Coach gives players development opportunities against some weaker opponents during preseason, but once the BIG season begins, rarely does so. The Maryland match was an exception because it was not competitive. We may well see similar opportunities tonight and Saturday, depending on how well Rutgers does and how we play. But to see Blossom and Sciora in the fifth set of a match against Nebraska was very surprising, and exciting.
I find the comparison between Coach and Phil Jackson fascinating to think about. Jackson was a deep, hippy like person who did many unconventional things (and who had a great hook shot!). Jackson's skill as a coach was to keep egotistical stars working together towards a singular goal. Sometimes Coach is unconventional too, but I doubt he had much of a hook shot!

As fans, we often ask these kinds of questions. I think there are two answers: 1) because Coach Rose has a young team and he's trying to get them accustomed to playing together, which would be disrupted by changing the lineup simply to experiment; and 2) who would you sub them in for? Phegley for any of the three MBs (if they're not injured)? I wouldn't, unless they're having a poor match. Phegley for Jonni Parker? Again, I wouldn't unless Jonni is struggling. Cathey for Reed? No, unless injury requires it (and that's when it happened). Cathey for Leath? No -- Cathey is not a 6-rotation player at this point in her career.
