Go Izzy & Ava!! Ethan - do you know if the game will be broadcasted anywhere? I don't see any broadcasting details in the UA AA Game webpage ( underarmournext.com/volleyball/all-america/), but the 2023 game was on ESPNU. Perhaps it will be the same for 2024. Hopefully more information is provided soon - Would like to see our 2024 commits compete!

I can't see them stopping now.

Just found this little nugget:
"BREAKING: Minnesota redshirt junior Taylor Landfair has entered the transfer portal. The 6-foot-5 outside was the 2022 Big Ten player of the year. She averaged 3.19 kills and 2.03 digs per set. She could have up to 2 years of eligibility left if she gets a medical hardship."
Let's get an alert sent to Katie's phone ASAP!!!!!

My speculation - Not many programs/staffs started to follow her since she entered the Portal, so I'm wondering if she has a "do not contact" status in her Portal entry and already has her destination.

You're probably right. Word on the street is that she wants to go to Nebraska. Anyway, I'm also not convinced she'd be a great get for PSU, after seeing her passing numbers. On another note, Ella Wrobel, Wisconsin 6-4 OH, just hit the portal.

I wonder if the transfer portal will turn the B1G into a circular firing squad over the next decade.

This year I'm having a hard time been 100% on the portal. Do we need some serious middle help YES! Definitely use the portal for that. As well as a back up/someone to compete against setter Starck. But I really cringe at the thought of bringing in another OH, especially someone like Wrobel, who has not seen any court time at their current school, but has all this hype from club/highschool days and was highly ranked and everyone was expecting to be this amazing college player. I would love to see the staff dedicate the off season into developing Markley & Willow into consistent hitters that can go up against these other great B1G players. Maybe bring in a senior or grad transfer that can compete with them for the OPP. But I think bringing in someone who is an automatic starter like everyone knew Jess was could create serious issues for a team. And I think as everyone learned this year teams really need to mesh especially with new/transfer players coming in. (this is very much a ramble and my opinion does not matter at all, but just my two cents )

Definitely agree with you statefan12. I think the OHs we have on the roster have so much talent that needs to be developed. If Markley can become consistent and tap into her potential I don’t see a big need for any other OHs. And same with Willow, especially with the 2025 pins coming in. Although she didn’t play much the few swings I did see from Willow had power! Also hoping Hannah’s back row defense gets developed more this off season to help keep her on the service line a for a few extra points. And would love to see both her and Jess taking more back row attacks also.
Definitely need MBs and another setter. Wondering if they may be looking into running a 6-2 and bring in a more experienced setter because Starck looked really good hitting on the RS from what I’ve seen and is a bit more terminal compared to her sister I believe. And I think both Markley and Willow would be great RS players with their height and blocking ability if Hannah is staying on the outside (which I think she should). Haven’t seen too many MBs that would fit Penn State’s needs hit the portal yet unfortunately though. And if they are looking for a solid RS fingers crossed for Rutherford!

Finally this thread is starting to make sense. The portal, whether we like it or not, is part of the game now, but it’s not the miracle drug Texas’s success in 2022 made everyone think it is. When you unanimously “win” the off season transfer portal but can’t convert that to success during the season, it should tell you it’s a lot harder to win that way than some think. Even though Coach Rose didn’t find success with it in his last season, we seemed to all agree KSC’s use of it to quickly add depth after the coaching change made sense, and 2022 was a success. If I leaned anything from watching PSU this past season, it was that using the portal to simply stack our roster with players who were good at another school doesn’t make us better than or provide success against teams that recruit and develop talented high school players, even if they have some growing pains. Also, I learned chemistry is extremely important to winning. We lacked the chemistry and leadership it takes to get over the top all season and I can’t help but attribute that to the large amount of roster turnover from year to year, and the fact it’s not easy to create chemistry when a good many players have diplomas from other universities. I fear that use of the portal leads to concerns about whether young players at PSU will get developed, and that it trickles down into recruiting as high school players, parents, and club coaches start to look at what’s going on at schools like PSU that use the portal as their primary means of finding the next all-American rather than developing a recruited high school player into one. If we start to lose young talent to the portal the damaging effects could set PSU back even farther. There is no doubt everyone at the top of college volleyball will continue to use the portal, and even John Cook, who has been very vocal about not liking the portal has used it, and PSU needs to as well. But I agree it’s time to develop the players we have and limit our use of the portal to specific immediate needs caused by unexpected departures when there isn’t time to develop a young player. The issue is not that the players PSU has brought in the last three season weren’t talented, they certainly were, but it’s still not enough to achieve the ultimate goal of winning a championship. In fact, it can be the reason you don’t, as the real issue when you have so many transfers, is whether the team will not only have the talent but also the chemistry to make the sum of the whole greater than the total of its parts. Texas did that this year, taking a whole season to get a freshman setter to gel with players that have been there a long time. Nebraska found success with a very young roster as well. Long term, especially as the Covid bonus year goes away, I think schools that have limited their use of transfers to filling very specific needs on a very limited basis will have more success recruiting than those who didn’t. “Transfer Portal U” as we were mockingly referred to on another forum, isn’t a compliment and that stigma and the negative effect on recruiting will last longer than the depth of Covid year talent. When the portal well dries up, I’d like to see PSU still be a top program.
