2018 NCAA DI Women's Volleyball Selection Show
Tournament bracket will be revealed.
Date: Sunday, November 25, 2018
Time: 7:30 p.m. CT
Channel: ESPNU From 2008 to 2016 there was a max seeding and RPI difference ranging of 5-13 spots. However, in 2017, the Selection Committee only had a max difference of 2 spots between RPI and seeding. It seems the 2016 outrage on VT caused the Selection Committee to stay very close to RPI in 2017. It will be interesting to see if this is a sign of what the 2018 (and future) Selection Committee(s) will be doing.

They have to do most of the brackets on Saturday. ESPNU needs time on Sunday afternoon to make their graphics, put together who they are going to interview, and let the announcers collect their thoughts about what they will say.
Question: Does the NCAA do a RPI calculation on Friday night, tonight, based on the available games for the selection committee. Or do they take last weeks RPI and just look at any big upsets this past week.
Even if Penn State loses to Minnesota it will improve Penn State's RPI because of Minnesota's win loss record.

Great question. I have no idea -- but it really would seem appropriate (and do-able) for them to do an RPI calculation on Friday night based on the available games. Somehow, I have doubts they take that path.

From what I've read, the committee has the 64 team list completed before the weekend. They then make a list of potential adjustments for various scenarios based on the final weekend's results. Although, sometimes they don't apply the adjustments. Go figure.

So...it's selection Sunday! What are everyone's predictions, hopes and fears?
I just turned in my VT poll for the week, and this was my Top 25:
1. Stanford 2. Minnesota 3. Illinois 4. Wisconsin 5. Nebraska 6. Penn State 7. Texas 8. Creighton 9. Kentucky 10. BYU 11. Pittsburgh 12. Tennessee 13. Purdue 14. Oregon 15. Florida 16. Marquette 17. Cal Poly 18. UCF (Central Florida) 19. Southern Cal 20. Washington State 21. Missouri 22. Washington 23. Michigan 24. Arizona 25. Utah
I fear that an 8/9 is looking very probable. I'm certain that Stanford, Minnesota, Illinois, Texas, BYU and Nebraska will be above us. Then we'd be in a mix with the likes of Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Creighton and USC for the following spots. Would you rather be in the Stanford or Minnesota regional if you had to pick one?
I just know I'm gonna be angry with it.
My guess:
1 Stanford 16 Florida 9 Penn State 8 Kentucky
4 Texas 13 Oregon 12 Washington State 5 BYU
3 Illinois 14 Marquette 11 Creighton 6 Wisconsin
2 Minnesota 15 Pittsburgh 10 Southern Cal 7 Nebraska

I think the Texas regional looks doable. Maybe a 12 seed would be good?

What do people think are chances psu is in the 10-12 range and avoids that 8 and 9 spot?

If the objective is to play as many matches as possible, then the seeding matters. If the objective is to win the national title, then it doesn't. To win the title you must beat the best at some point in the playoffs.
On the other hand, sometimes the top seeds tumble away for you (see 2010 Nittany Lion champions).

As many matches as possible? You gotta play six matches to win. Right?

I’m fine going to Stanford though as long as Nebraska comes with us. They also seem to avoid west coast. It’s very convenient

Stanford will be super phishstixed if they draw PSU on their side.

Stanford will be super phishstixed if they draw PSU on their side. I don’t care where psu lands as long as it’s in same region in Nebraska. All I want is for psu to be the team to eliminate them. I hate Nebraska more then anyone. Plus I want retribution for last two years. Psu had them on ropes both years and let it slip. That one two years ago where they were set point from sweep still hurts. Need to make things right

Seeding only matters if we don't consider ourselves National Champion material. If we only seek the Final Four before we fail, the #4 bracket is supposed to be the easiest path, every year, by design. After this weekend's games, I believe we CAN beat anybody this year. With so many freshmen on the team this year, I'd like PSU to enter a certain, maximum level of competition and sustain it until the end of the season. I think these girls can play down to their competition, and I'd rather get that out of their system early, rather than meet #13-16 seed to make the Final Four. That's prolly just me though.

Let psu eliminate Nebraska and that will be a finish I can be thrilled about no matter what happens after that.
