Is anyone here setting up a bracket contest? I used to participate in the various bracket challenges at VT, but as many of you know, I am permanently banned there.

I was thinking of running one here. I was looking at the setup of Volleytalk version of the bracket challenge. Because you have to choose the entire bracket beforehand, I don't like that the VT version only gives you one point per correct pick in all rounds. I'm a member of the BigSoccer forum and the bracket challenge there gives increasing points as the rounds progress. I'm thinking of emulating that system. Here's an excerpt of how it works and the reasoning behind that point system.
Summary of point scoring system:
"So this system offers offers 56 points for the last three rounds but for many contestants it is a conundrum as to how to yet elevate yourself above the pack. Since there is typically a 40%-70% consensus at that stage of who the winners will be, if you want to gain on the other top contestants you have to pick an outlier that most of the competition will not and it's a risk-reward situation -not picking the team you think will win. Consequently, the real work is the first three rounds to gain a substantial lead and that is why these rounds are weighted as there are more consequential choices to get points."
Reasoning behind point system:
"Identifying the correct winner of a match will be awarded with 1,3,6,8,8,8 points for each of the 6 rounds. (eg total points available for each of the 6 rounds are 32, 48, 48, 32,16, 8. This system typically puts about 1/3 of the field into a position of possibly winning by the end of the third round. (Those who are yet in position to win the contest usually do well in the 2nd and 3rd rounds -- The "Upset" Rounds.) The "elite 8" round (round 4) does some good pruning of contestants down to 3 or 4 possible victors, and the semi finals and championship game separate those remaining viable winning contestants to find the our Champion Prognosticator. So far in the contest, I don't think that we've had a tie in the 7 years I've been participating in (or running) this contest."
"The second and third rounds are weighted the most. Each round will potentially produce 48 points in this system. (Round 2 yields 3 points for each correct pick, and Round 3 yields 6 per correct pick. The first round yields 32 points at one point per correct pick. The last three rounds yield 8 points per pick for a potential pick up of 32, 16 and 8 per round.)
The reason that the second rounds are weighted the most is because these are the rounds that typically produce the most "upsets", and if a contestant can navigate the first three rounds with so many possible picks (56 total picks for 128 possible points) then if a contestant gets a good percentage of them correct (and especially hits on the eventual elite 8) he or she will be in a good position to win the contest along with perhaps a half dozen others. Once you get to the elite 8 then most of the remaining matches would not be considered "upsets" in a real on-the-field way as it is those teams that are proving to be the best in the field in November (regardless of the expectations at the beginning of the month.) In this system one can still separate from the other contestants in the last three rounds especially if there is a variety of picks for the final four an the eventual champion, but typically, there is agreement by most contestants regarding the final four and an eventual winner."
The BigSoccer bracket projection also adds in various machine brackets based on a computer calculation or even a hand calculated arithmetic ranking systems (i.e., objective and subjective rankings). So, that would include the likes of RPI, AVCA, Pablo, Massey, Bennett, etc.
Let me know what you all think.

I think it looks great! As my Slacker Staff so often says to me "Let's do this!" However, I should warn millennium that in Slacker Staffeese, "let's do this" typically means they enthusiastically approve of my dedicated involvement, aided by their observational skills. It might have a similar meaning here.

Before you embark on this effort, you might want to find out (as near as you can) how many intend to participate.
I will give it a go.

Millennium: Let us know if that's enough interest, and how we should proceed if it is. And thanks!

I just completed my bracket for one of the bracket contests on VT (not the official VT contest, which is a complete pain in the arse).
By some miracle or perhaps human error, my HappyVolley account at VT is no longer banned. I do, however, have a 50% warning. I suppose one more comment in the Politics forum about the Not Relevant Topic Foundation will get me booted again.

Someone on VT is running a 3rd party Bracket Challenge, and you don't need to be a VT member.
It might be better to let a computer tally all the votes. Also, they're using a progressive point system, which I like.
Here are the particulars. It's pretty simple: - You predict the outcome of the entire NCAA tournament, based on the bracket that was announced a few hours ago. - You get one prediction (i.e. one bracket). - Scoring works as follows: Correctly picking a first round match-up is worth 1 point, a second round match-up is worth 2 points, a Regionals match-up is worth 4 points, Elite 8 round is worth 8 points, Final 4 is worth 16 points, and the Championship is worth 32 points.
- Winner is based on the total # of points. - To note: Deadline: Wednesday, November 25th, 11:59 AM PST. How to play (not the most straight-forward process but there surprisingly aren't many "bracket challenge" generators - apologizing in advance but the user interface/experience is nothing like the ESPN/Fox Sports/etc. March Madness bracket challenges out there):
Step 1: Click here to access the link to the bracket. Step 2: Click "Predict It!" Step 3 (important one):You will be asked to "Register." You will need to create an account to play and need to validate your account via email. For "Your Name" please use your Dignittany account name (i.e. millennium). For some, this will be different than your "display" name. That way I can match your bracket to your username. No one else will be able to see your email, but I will. I won't share these emails with anyone, but if you are uncomfortable with me having your real email address, please create a fake email address. Side contest to the user with the most middle school email address. Step 4:After you have validated your account and received your email, log-in, go back to the same link above, and click "Predict It!" This site requires you to submit all of your Round 1 votes, scroll down, hit "Enter" and then hit all of your Round 2 votes, etc. Not the most user friendly but it works. Repeat this step until you have predicted the entire bracket. Important note: you only need to enter a "score" for the Championship match. This will be used as the tiebreaker.
Additional rules:
1. Brackets are due November 28th at 11:59:00 AM PST. 2. TIEBREAKER: For the final Championship match, enter into the "Score" field the total points scored by both teams. User who gets the closest, wins. (Not sure if I'll "tiebreak" ALL ties.)
3. Only one entry allowed per poster. If your name has 2 entries associated with it, I will use the first submitted. 4. Entries are "hidden" until after the deadline. Then you will be able to view other's brackets. 5. You can edit/delete your ballots up until the deadline. Not a super straight-forward process, so reach out if you need help doing that.
