Figured never to early to get started on next years thread and wasn’t sure if one was started yet or not. Also thought it would help move the talk away from the immediate past and into future. Hey I’m ok with where psu got to and lost. Does losing suck sure. Does watching lose a match that with a little more experience could have won sure. Does seeing Nebraska still there really suck. Yep. We all have our different personal opinions about individual players and team but I think if we look back at our feelings when season started most would be pretty happy that we got close to final four in a year meant to be rebuilding year expressed by everyone. Most thought this was gonna be one of psu toughest years in awhile. It’s easiest in the given moment to get mad but if we really think about our feelings at beginning of year i think most would agree it was a pretty good year. A lot of emotion in the heat of the moment by fans. I can be the most guilty of anyone in that department. With that though the past is the past and it’s time To move on and start over. Psu is gonna be super young this next season so I’m excited to see what they can do. If A team that young can make some noise that’s the best cause u know you’ll have everyone for awhile. Interested to see how these incoming outsides do. I believe one is playing in the all America game comming up.

I will be interested to see if coach is a player in this years transfer market Seems to me there is too much riding on ypungbpin hitters and if the opportunity to grab one elite experienced hitter maybe It is accomodated No idea who but it seems like a big hole relying on frosh and an inexperienced sophomore to get poonts

The thing is, by my guesstimate, the three 2018 scholarship graduations (Weiskircher, Reed and Leath) are netted out by the three incoming OH freshmen (Clark, Ferguson and Bailey). Unless a scholarship player decides to leave, there aren't any scholarships available for a transfer. The only alternative to a player deciding, on their own, to leave, is what in football and basketball is sometimes referred to as a "carefrontation" -- where the coach sits down with the player and says "You're welcome to stay, but if you do, in all likelihood you won't ever play. You're not good enough." Or words to that effect. I have no information about what goes on at any D1 Volleyball program in this regard, but certainly Nebraska's John Cook is, rightly or wrongly, alleged by some to have engaged in several "carefrontations" over the years. Coach Rose may (I don't know this, just speculating) have had some version of a "carefrontation" (maybe not quite the stark binary choices I noted) with Jelena Novakovic and Wilma Rivera, who in 2016 transferred from Penn State to Virginia and Louisville, respectively -- both playing alot, and Wilma being named ACC Setter of the Year. The difference in the way Cook allegedly conducts his carefrontations, some people maintain (without any proof that I've seen, though I'm predisposed to believe negative things about John Cook -- he just rubs me the wrong way) is that John Cook (allegedly) pressures players to leave, and is very tough on them (again, allegedly) even if they have played pretty well, in order to open up space for transfers like Kelly Robinson, Brianna Holman, and Lexi Sun. The question for Penn State fans is this: Which model (or alleged model) do you think both improves Penn State's chances for team success, and meets Penn State's stated standards of "Success with Honor." Personally, I don't like the idea of Penn State becoming a transfer mill --this isn't some computer game where it's all about stats and not at all about human beings. On the other hand, in this new era where players can, without notifying the coach, put themselves on a list that essentially says to all coaches "I'm on the market!" -- maybe coaches are justified in skewing towards a "carefrontation" approach.

I used to be a Pollyanna who thought anyone who came to PSU...lucky enough to even ride the bench...would always stay. Then Longo left. Then Prieto Cereme left. etc. Some went to places/coaches where Coach seemed to have special relationships (former PSUers in the coaching ranks in Louisville and UVA, plus we can probably count Shoji as a close associate).
So now I figure they're all possibly leaving. They're not all going to be Nia Reed who's patience and hard work was rewarded. I want them all to be Nia, but I'm now untrusting.
So I wait for the news...

It won't be enough to fill Taylor Leath's slot with a strong arm. The team will need a solid six rotation player who can dig and pass as well as hit.

I think the idea you pitched on VT sounded really good:

Lol But there was also a "debate" about whether Bryanna was "great" or "average." I'd like to offer a third option: this season, she was "very good" -- an assessment that would be supported by her B1G Second Team award.

Actually, Haleigh Washington is the first person I heard in an interview that said that Byranna has nice hands.
A setter must have good hands, but must also make good decisions with her sets.
I think the later, from time to time, is what kept her out of the conversation for setter of the year. Having said that, she was a very complete player. That is, besides setting, she served well, blocked well, dug a lot of balls, etc., etc.

Hancock has distorted my view of volleyball cause loved her so much so nothing else is the same. Seems maybe I’m always bitter causes nobody else is her.

I think most of us have the same opinion of Micha — a POY, NC’s, tremendous leader, server, setter. Imagine being Weiskircher and having to follow her. Bryanna actually did well to earn a “very good” compared with Micha.

The game that many of you springing from Mr. Cook may be shady or not since I do not know enough of the details to evaluate. BUT I AM CONFIDENT THAT RUSS WILL NEVER BE PART OF THAT WHICH IS SHADY, QUESTIONABLE OR JUST DOWN RIGHT IMPROPER. Regarding those who came here and left they left because they no longer were relevant to Russ's teams. AND THEY KNEW IT because Russ does not withhold his evaluation for every player on the team and he tells them where they stand.
HE made a misjudgaement of their skill potential. I suspect he helped them find a home although I cannot verify anything solid to support that claim.
One point I would like to make about MICHA she was a player who played from the settting position. That did not make her a good setter. It made her a valuable player

Exciting times on DigNittany!
Questioning Coach Rose. Deconstructing Saint Micha's setting prowess. What's next?
Could this be a theme for 2019? Looking at things from different perspectives?
2019's team certainly looks to be the least experienced team in recent memory. For the first time since the beginning of the 2007 season, there's nobody on the roster with any ties to a National Championship. Just as 2019 will be new ground for the team, it will present "us fans" with challenges on how to deal with the uncertainty.
I'd suggest we read the posts to come with an open mind and spirit of tolerance. It's not a time for group think.

Penn State 2019 may probably be most similar to Penn State 2016. Penn State 2015 was supposed to struggle a bit with Hancock, Gonzalez, Fuller, and Grant all gone, but with Courtney and Whitney on the roster (both now with Team USA experience), the team wasn't half bad. For whatever reason, that team seemed to regress as the season went on, perhaps it was leadership? Penn State 2018 was billed as a young team but Nia, Taylor, and B (and Kendall) were very experienced. The next year (2016) the team struggled a bit--no senior leadership. By the end of the year at NCAAs, they started to gel and put it together a bit and almost took down Nebraska (probably won't ever get over that one).
The difference between PSU 2016 and hopefully 2019 is senior leadership and passing. I think Kendall will bring a lot to the team next year. RR continues to emphasize the need for a strong leader on the court. Hopefully, Gorell will provide the same poise she brought this year. We need one 6-rotation passer to come in (or develop), but it's not unheard of for a freshman - think Courtney. If the passing is strong (which it wasn't between Dom and Kendall), any team has a chance.
It'll be a new team, with new faces, and new roles! Looking forward to it! Is it August yet?
