nitpoz: The ankle you refer to called for a change in setters. But unfortunately Carp was not prepared and had been a regular "no show " when it came to working in place of Micha. That's an interesting insight about which few of us would be aware. I can't speak for others, but having no perspective, it's surprising to think of a player being a "no-show" for a portion of practice. Perhaps with her career drawing to a close, she opted out of setter drills? In any event, you've opened my eyes to possibilities I've never considered.

Don't know anything about practices during the 2012 season, but here's a play-by-play from GoPSUsports.com of the set 2 against Oregon:

My recollection was that the team looked terrible after Carp came in, and watching Micha limp back in as a result. I also remember Slay basically camping out next to Micha on the block leaving the left side basically open, because Micha had trouble jumping after the ankle roll. The play by play makes it seem like Carp held her own, and after Micha returned, the team got hot and managed set points. Funny how the mind works (or doesn't work!)

What I didn't remember was that prior to Micha returning, the team actually did better under Carp (5-7) than it had under Micha (4-9); Of course, things picked up for Penn State after her return, and Penn State nearly won that second set.

The play by play makes it seem like Carp held her own, and after Micha returned, the team got hot and managed set points. Funny how the mind works (or doesn't work!) 33.04 Micha goes down 4-9 Oregon back to back poor off the net sets from Carp 39.59 Micha checks in 9-16 Oregon up Fast forward to 53: 35 Oregon has setpoint 22-24 PSU bomb from Mclendon and then has a wall set up set up by Scott/Grant for back to back points 25-24 PSU (setpoint 1) . Off the net set from Hancock leads to a poor attack and block of Scott tied 25-25 On target back set keeping ball in front of hitter leads to a bomb cross court attack from MClendon 26-25 (Set point 2) The next play was the killer imo. Perfect transition dig and reverse flow perfect set from Hancock to Scott. Instead of driving it cross court (where we had been scoring all day) she tries to paint the line and misses by 2 feet. That was a tough point imo ugh 26-26 Luckily mishandled set from Plum PSU 27-26 (3rd) set point) Nice short serve from Dom....sketchy set to OH from Plum (possibly mishandle) and 2 things happen that aren't called. The Oregon OH hits the antenna with the ball and strikes the net on the follow through. The down ref is only watching the feet and his head is down and looking for contact and under.....and NOT the net action which was plain as day from my perspective in the crowd. 27-27 Another perfect dug ball and set to the OH. Megan hits into the meat of the block and Slay can't handle it out of the net. 27-28 Nice pass from Megan , Micha sets the Pipe to Deja and she has to roll a ball to the 1/6 Oregon runs a transition to the OH but Slay comes up big and saves the day. 28-28 PSU outblocking Oregon 15-4 in only game 2. Big mistake from Lacey with the missed serve long 28-29 Oregon. Ace on Deja Oregon wins 28-30. PSU had chances at 25-24 and 26-25 with clean opportunities to swing to end the game and possibly the match. AND yes the game was over with the attacking error that the 2 refs and 2 linesmen missed at 3rd match point 27-26. Thankfully we have replay finally and it is getting better. The 2nd/3rd set break/rest time didn't help Micha but she was setting better and the team played better around her than Carp and I would have done exactly what Coach Rose did.

Thanks for posting that. My recollection about the setting in set 2 was not as far off as the play by play seemed to suggest. But there was a lot I did forget including Slay serving and defending! What a fine group that was-very fond memories.

What a fine group that was-very fond memories. The strong offensive and defensive weapons at our disposal was quite impressive. One if the few that "got away" from us . but not many teams can say that.

gn2vb: "NO ShOW" CAN BE DEFINED ALSO AS ONE WHO IS THERE BUT. WELL, NOT GIVING IT FULL ATTENTION OR PERHAPS JUST GOFFING OFF RATHER THAN WORKING HARD

Wow, great insight! I’ve ALWAYS wondered about that decision putting the injured Micha back in over the healthy blocking Carp who was the setter the previous years championship team. Carp really never was allowed to find her grove though... and she was able to block better than one footed Micha. This one definitely got away from us.
Would be interesting to hear Carpenters take on this now, wouldn’t it?

Carp really never was allowed to find her grove though... and she was able to block better than one footed Micha. This was the National Championship semi final.....there was no time to find your groove. Either you hit it running or you dont. This was an incredibly difficult situation for Kristin to come into. She hadn't had any game experience the whole year and really had a tough year relegated to becoming a serving sub for much of the last half of the year. There isn't a fan I know who didnt feel for her nor not want her to be successful. It just didn't happen. My guess is Kristin ran the spectrum of emotions that day and for a while.....but quickly realized that game nor that season defined her. Kristin Carpenter is one of the most beloved and respected players AND personalities 😁 to wear the Blue/White.
