Agree 100% about Parker's impressive performance in that post match interview. What an amazing young woman.

Talking Head always provides good perspective.
I suspect that part of the reason Kendall worked so much out of the 6 spot is because Jenna was trusted to hold down the 5. So I concur that Jenna deserves big credit. When Jenna was not on the court, Kendall moved over to 5 and Taylor was in the center.

Hampton's production makes Kendall's #s look even more impressive, IMO. 2. Still amazed we've been so lucky to have Hampton here at same time as Kendall. 3. Back in our 4-peat days, I remember some of the folks who came off the bench to serve ran into trouble again and again. I remember all Coach could do was the old eye-roll, which the cameras consistently caught. Our DS contingent this year, I suspect, has much better numbers than any recent ones. Sciorra was consistently consistent throughout the season, and never showed a problem under pressure...not streaky. Hoffman was pretty good. So I'd also salute our DS contingent for their hard work.

The praise should go to the person known as Talking Head, who is thoughtful, knowledgeable, articulate, and colorful. Goethe wrote “Music is liquid architecture; Architecture is frozen music," and (paraphrasing here) Amos Bronson Alcott wrote "Sculptures are crystallized spirituality." Talking Head speaking about volleyball is poetry in motion.

Good "up" Traveler. Our serving subs were good, and able to defend. In particular, Blossom showed us a good serve and very solid defense. I recall that she pounced on a few setter dumps, which is a play that has historically vexed us.

How can you do a review that ignores the most glaring failures? Up 20-16 2nd set our serve receive went in the tank. Taylor got aced and then a seam serve was just let to drop.
Each year Russ keeps his 6 rotation players in too long as they get targeted time and time again and they choke on their serve receive. We have great DS’s on the BENCH who can put 3 balls up consistently and under pressure.
Stanford knew our serve receive would crack with Taylor in there and it did. It also knew Russ would stubbornly not adjust again and he didn’t. Our setter was running all over the place just trying to reach the balls. THATS WHERE our offense failed.. can’t run middle with those passes and made Stanford block MUCH easier with us out of system. . I think Russ has to take the blame again

If I'm a betting man, I'm not going to bet against Coach Rose's decision-making skills. But, I'm also not willing to bet that he's never made a mistake.
Over the years, I have noticed times that the Coach doesn't call a timeout, or sub, when things appear to be going south. It could be that he's forcing a gut check on his team--to see if they can work their way through difficulties. If it works, well he's saved a timeout or sub for later.
A situation from PSU football history comes to mind. I think it was the 1979 Sugar Bowl for a National Championship against Alabama. PSU was trailing in a hard-fought defensive struggle and had earned a First and Goal on Alabama's one-yard-line. In what was likely perceived as a contest of will, Paterno called four straight running plays and was stopped four straight times. Now most times, Paterno made good calls and he won more football games than any other coach. But he wasn't infallible.
Perhaps Nitpoz might have worded his post differently, but I think we stifle discussion when posts that question decisions are met reflexively by responses along the lines of, "Coach Rose is the living Volleyball God."

Keeping our big girls in the back row so we have the back row attack threat cost us the last two years. We were up 20-16 and ready to go up 2-0 on Stanford! Serve receive went Kaput!
While I’m pointing out stubbornness i’ll also point to Micha’s sprained ankle year. Rose brought her back in the match with the bad wheel all while having his previous year national champ setter watch Micha fail time after time, set after set. Remember that? Micha was maybe 50% her normal self after the injury and Carpenter had to watch.
I love Russ but just because we won 7 with AMAZING recruits and just flat out overpowered teams... doesn’t mean he’s NEVER wrong. Some of you just worship the king. I’ll call him out for his mistakes. He needs someone on his bench doing just that!

How can you do a review that ignores the most glaring failures? Stanford knew our serve receive would crack with Taylor in there and it did. It also knew Russ would stubbornly not adjust again and he didn’t. How can you ignore the fact that Stanford was the best team , with the best players , with the best record and was the best in the nation at overcoming poor stretches of play. Stanford was 6-1 against our 2018 team this year. 1 and 2/3 of those games happened to be competitive....the one we happened to win. I would like to believe that if Stanford hadn't asserted themselves in a few aces and tools and blocks......on numerous of our players (not named taylor leath) we could have gone up 2-0 and maybe ...maybe pulled the upset. The record and how Stanford established that record might actually deflate that hope unfortunately. So....they were better and won.

I’ll call him out for his mistakes. He needs someone on his bench doing just that! These are interesting observations. First, I agree with your point that Stanford won set 2 because we had trouble with serve receive in that set. I think we lost other sets for different reasons. However, I do not believe Coach leaves players on the floor because he is stubborn. Instead, I posit that we did not have anyone who was better at serve receive and passing than Taylor. As evidence for this proposition, I point out that Coach never hesitated to remove Taylor for Cathey in the attack when Taylor's offense struggled. But she had to receive because she was the best we had. Relative to other six rotation players, Taylor was really excellent at receive/pass. In fact, neutral observers pointed that our during the season, and even spoke glowingly of Taylor's passing skills while broadcasting a non Penn State match. Honestly, if Coach thought Sciorra, Blossom, Krause, Hoffman, or even Hill (who was not even dressed) had the potential to do better, he would have put them in. Sometimes, the only choice is to encourage your best players to play better. I recall well Micha's rolled ankle. Carpenter did come in, and was entirely ineffective. I remember being frustrated that she was not ready to step up, and in my mind did fault the staff for not making sure Carp was prepared (Carp did not play setter very much if at all during the season). But because Carp was not better, Micha had to return. It was the only choice.
