Penn State checked in at No. 8 in the AVCA preseason coaches poll, which was released Tuesday. Here’s the top 10:
1. Stanford
2. Nebraska
3. Minnesota
4. Texas
5. Wisconsin
6. Illinois
7. Kentucky
8. Penn State
9. BYU
10. Florida

The Nittany Lions will play a whopping nine opponents currently ranked within the top 17 this season. Stanford received 62 of the 64 first-place votes, while Nebraska and Penn State earned one apiece.

Thanks Ethan, According to these rankings PSU should finish fourth in the BIG10. I don't think so.

That pre-season ranking sounds about right to me, plus or minus. We'll see. The important ranking is at the end of the season, and for most fans -- certainly most/many Penn State fans, the only rank that counts is #1.

B1G is stacked yet again. Should be an interesting year and great opportunity for the girls to prove themselves, given our youth.

I will bet Russ Rose did not put Penn State in the top 10. After the first few matches things will start to sort out so this poll doesn't mean much.

Hi all... another exciting year for PSU Women's Volleyball. I am equal parts hyped n scared, this year. I can't really argue the #5 rank in B1G, given the graduation of so many excellent players last year. I just don't see any way such a competitive B1G can produce any shot at a #1 seed nationally, due to the impending knockdown, drag-out brawl I expect this season. But, at least 5-6 B1G teams will be battle-hardened for this year's Championship Tourney.

I can't remember. 1) I would guess Blossom at setter, White at libero, and Hampton at DS. The front row is obviously somewhat up in the air (as Coach Rose indicated in his interview): Gorrell at some combination of RS, MB and OH; Hord at MB; Gray at MB and sometimes RS (maybe); Phegley at RS (maybe) and sometimes MB; Parker at RS and OH; and Cathey at OH. 2) See answer to #1 3) Jonni Parker has always been listed as a RS/S. Perhaps one of the Freshmen will start at the second Outside Hitter position (though that involves serve receive and passing so maybe not). Tea leaf reading Russ Rose interview comments is not really a good bet, but it is all we have to go on right now. So far as I can glean, the Freshmen all have potential, but are thus far uncertain commodities. So he is trying most of the MHs (Gray, Gorrell and Phegley) at both right and left side, and will move Parker around (she probably will be the 6 rotation player). |
