stillkicking and gnu2vball - thanks for explaining why I'm labelled a freshman!
The start time of the football is unclear - one poster said it was 12 noon and another said it was 3.30 - can anyone clear that up. If it's true that people start arriving Thursday night, then surely I've got zero chance of parking anywhere on Friday evening. Conversely, if the football starts at 12 then I should be ok for parking at 6pm Saturday when most fans will have vacated their spots. Also is '100,000+' a typo? If it's true, that's a huge crowd for a college game!
I was feeling great last night but now I'm very worried again that I might not be able to park in Nittany or Red A

gnu2vball - you said about the crowd "You need to be concerned about it dissipating" Could you please explain what you mean? Thanks

Thanks I'm guessing they mean roads get really crowded leaving State College after a game. But if you're coming into State College, that won't affect you ad much, I would think.

I was feeling great last night but now I'm very worried again that I might not be able to park in Nittany or Red A People who arrive "early early" "tailgate" park near the stadium--it's an American thing. They arrive in campers and literally camp out. Others occupy all the local hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts. The students who attend are already in the campus area. Beaver Stadium holds over 100,000 and for the game against the University of Pittsburgh, also know as "Pitt," the stadium should be at or near capacity. College Football in America is a big thing. If you have the opportunity, you'll want to be in the area during the game so as to hear the crowd --you could probably score a ticket if you're interested. As I said, the schedule for the game said 12:00 Noon, but game times are subject to change depending on decisions by networks that televise the games. Checkout this link: Regarding the crowd dissipating, I was kind of kidding. As Nyline said, if you're headed into town after the football game, you'll be driving against the heaviest traffic. You're going to have quite an experience that weekend and you'll see what happens on many campuses across the country on football Saturdays. I'm envious.

That's this weekend's game. The Stanford volleyball game is the weekend of the Pitt-PSU game.

Thanks yogi and rleed51 - it looks like I'll be able to park easily and for free on Friday, but not Saturday. Do you know what time the football starts and when the bulk of the crowd starts arriving? Also, nyline, as administrator, why am I indicated on the forum as a 'freshman' I'm 65 for christ's sake!!!!!! The crowd (100,000+), starts arriving Thursday. You need to be concerned about its dissipating. "Dissipating crowd" sounds ominous-almost like a horror movie. It is so exciting that our ladies will have an international audience for these matches. I for one think its a wonderful choice on UK(GB) Volleyball fan's part to come to State College in September. Campus is beautiful, the atmosphere is great and there is much fun to be had. Try to find some time to get some ice cream at the creamery. The line will be long, but it moves quickly and the result is worth it. I have seen opposing volleyball players at the creamery on several occasions even from other agricultural schools.

elliotberten - to use an americanism, I'm 'super excited' about my trip to State College, even more so after reading your post! I hope the creamery is near the Rec Hall. I certainly will sample their ice cream if I can find it.

I certainly will sample their ice cream if I can find it. The creamery is not far from Rec Hall (in Penn State terms where some students have to trudge more than a mile to get to class). It may be a 15 minute walk in each direction at an average pace. I remember it seeming a lot further when I was sprinting from the creamery to Rec Hall at the end of a jogging class back in 1985 however! (and back then the Creamery was a little closer to Rec Hall). There are signs, and lots of folks who would be pleased to point you in the right direction. Happily, one does not need to walk down or uphill to get there from Rec Hall-as opposed to coming onto campus from town which involves traversing a bit of a steep hill. I will be at this weekend's opening matches. I am 'super excited" too-even though I won't need to take a plane or visit JFK to get there. And yes-we will be eating ice cream between the two matches on Saturday.

Thanks gnu2vball - unfortunately can't get any of the gopsusports sites in the UK. It recognises the links but never opens. I'm sure I'll be able to keep checking on the start time on other sites. This is a really friendly forum, people are so helpful. My only other visit to the States was in 1974 when, as a Phys Ed student in England, I got a BunaCamp summer placement teaching tennis at Ken Mont Camp in Connecticut. After the camp, I buddied up with an American student and we drove across the entire country, mostly on Route 80, except for a detour to Denver and the Rocky Moutains, rejoining Route 80 near Salt Lake City and eventually ending up in San Francisco where I stayed for a week with friends of my parents, before flying to Arizona where I stayed in Tuscon with 2 students I'd met at the camp. It was a great trip and what I remember most is how friendly and welcoming the American people were towards me. I did wonder if, 45 years later, on this trip, whether it might not be quite the same, but I needn't have worried if the people on this forum are anything to go by. Thank you to all who have messaged me - I really do appreciate it!

We all get there, Unfortunately you can't stop or reverse time. If I could i would take the reverse of my age and be 17 again and know what I know today.
