Returning All-Americans Jonni Parker and Kaitlyn Hord joined head coach Russ Rose at the podium during Wednesday’s fall sports media day at the Bryce Jordan Center. You can check out their full comments below.

"The challenge of finding players who really want to work hard." (as opposed to finding players who say they want to work hard)
hmmmmmmm....
I was kind of amused by Coach Rose talking up the B1G as the NCAA's preeminent conference.... and then he mentioned championships as a criteria. I'm still waiting for an original B1G team to win a championship. Championships aside, the B1G is the best volleyball conference. The fact that only PSU and Nebraska have won them probably makes discussions with Illini, Wisconsin, and Minnesota fans interesting.

Thanks Ethan for posting.
No one can top Rose for sounding so "excited" while talking about how "excited" everyone is. More than one comedian made a living from a deadpan tone. I suppose if Russ ever retires, he could hit the stand up circuit.
Coach was pretty candid about certain things. Since he values being honest with his players, we must assume that he is not saying things to provide extra motivation. It sounded like the unnamed "younger players" are not yet performing at the level Coach feels is necessary.
Also very intrigued by the idea that this team may have to compete with more will than skill. As I recall, the current Sophomore group was very highly regarded when they came in and quite of few of the players showed high level performances last year. Yet Coach blamed his recruiting for the current talent level which he implied is somewhat lacking. I will be curious as the season progresses to see how the skills of our ladies match up with the many quality opponents on the schedule.

It's interesting that he doesn't feel this roster has much depth outside of the starting group. So, now I'm really curious to know who the starting OH will be. Hopefully, the freshmen can mature fast and get playing time. Also interesting that he's got players like Gorrell trying different positions this late in their careers.

Okay...so where was Kendall? I expected her to be there. And who is not working as hard as she should be?
I guess he directs these comments to those ladies who should be examining their consciences, as the nuns used to say.
You have to be tough to play for Russ, even though they all seem to love him.

Jonni is such an impressive young woman with amazing presence. Mature beyond her years and I love how she responded to the last question without hesitation.

Hopefully, the freshmen can mature fast and get playing time. Also interesting that he's got players like Gorrell trying different positions this late in their careers. Tori practiced at all three front row positions last year, and took a few unsuccessful swings at RS. I recall that, last season, Coach lauded Tori for her efforts to do whatever the team might need. I think that, like Heidi Thelen, we will see Gorrell at RS, while Parker will swing from 4 or 5 positions. I also think that there will be some rotations early on where we have 3 Middles on the front row. History suggests that the starters on opening weekend will not remain so throughout the season. But I believe that Allyson Cathey will be starting OH. The second OH spot could be Serena Gray. Significantly, the OHs usually are expected to receive serve, and that might dictate who plays in that/those spot(s).

Thanks Ethan, Great to see Jonni and Kaitlyn give their opinion on the team. Let's hope they are right and the new comers can add some zip to the team.

Yes, I thought it pretty interesting that none of the three captains were at the presser. Maybe coach wanted Kaitlyn and Jonni to practice answering media questions. As to your second point, I have decided to believe Coach when he says that he prefers to address his concerns directly to a player and not speak to them through the media. It was my impression that Coach was trying to control our expectations. However, I did find it interesting that Coach disagreed with Kaitlyn's diplomatic comment that the Freshman have gotten better already during the pre-season. (Coach characterized that statement as "cute").

There are so many quality players throughout the B1G which makes the conference season a gigantic challenge. I was most impressed by the number of B1G grads (and one undergrad) who played on the National Team in the VNL this Summer. I think the overall level of competition is a substantial factor in arguing for conference superiority.

I was only quibbling with Coach Rose citing the B1G's championships as criteria for their exalted position. Come to think of it, the B1G's ascendance is a recent thing--over the last 12 years. The PAC-12 can make a strong case if the number of championships is a leading criteria.
