Can anyone recommend a website which shows the location of roadworks and road closures in the State College area and beyond? I'm flying in from England on Friday 13th September and will be driving to State College from JFK Airport, leaving at about 2pm. I know I'll miss the Minnesota v Oregon game at 6 but I obviously want to make sure I'm at the Rec Hall in time to catch the Penn State v Stanford game at 9.
Everything is organised and in place, and I've secured a parking place about 45 minutes walk from the hall (or 5 minute taxi), so the only thing I need to keep my eye on is traffic reports. I know that Saturday is a football day and that the area will be swamped with, unbelievably, 100,000 fans!
Once in the Rec, I know I have to pick up my ticket from 'Will Call' and then what? Do I just go in and grab whatever seat I can? Can anyone offer any advice about this?
At home, here in Nottingham, UK, I've seen lots of amazing volleyball games on ESPN and I have always wanted to experience a game 'live' so I'm very excited about this trip. Even if Friday goes wrong and I miss the game, I know I'll definitely be seeing two great games on Saturday. Can't wait!!

If you google Pittsburgh tribune, In the sports section under Penn State you will see an article titled " Fans guide to Penn State football " that will give you all the info you need for the game.Sorry to hear you are flying into JFK, I don't know if you could have got a flight to Newark NJ airport but that would have been your best bet. At any rate when you leave JFK follow signs for 678 North the Van Wyck expressway to the Grand central parkway route 278 to route 87 north to route 95 south to route 80 west there is no construction to worry about just heavy traffic getting out of New York on a friday night once you get near State College which would be exit 161 you should have directions to your hotel, Good luck hope you enjoy yourself and have good memories to take home with you.

Doesn't US Air still offer commuter flights from LaGuardia to University Park? Getting from Kennedy to State College by car is going to be hell.

Why is it going to be hell? It's freeways all the way. What are Welcome Stations? I actually wanted to go by car to see a bit of America, albeit from the freeway. I'm planning to leave the freeway a couple of times to visit a couple of small towns and get a bite to eat. I will have 7 hours to do the journey to State College and it's only 258 miles. I could very easily get from my home city Nottingham down to London and back in 7 hours, and that's a similar distance.
Is there something I don't know?

The drive will be tough, but I think you'll make it in time.

I won't sugarcoat this: You're leaving the biggest urban center on the east coast on a Friday afternoon. There will be heavy traffic. Some people actually commute (by car) from eastern Pennsylvania to New York City every day. You'll be joining them and all of the other people that are leaving the New York Metropolitan area for a weekend. Generally, our interstates (what you'll travel most of the way) are well-marked, but the signs aren't necessarily in the same place as they are at home. Try to be aware as to where you need to merge onto "the next road." Most times, it's to the right, but sometimes it's on the left. Hopefully, your phone has software to help you with directions. Welcome Stations are at state borders--when you cross from one state to another on an Interstate. There are apocryphal stories about strange goings-on at Wecome Centers in some states. This was not meant as a serious impediment you need to concern yourself with. Generally, Americans like to whine about traffic. Sometimes the whining is justified, sometimes it's "me-too-ism." You'll be fine.
