I'm a fan of Poulter, but I think she lacks experience. I believe Micha is still in play to make the Tokyo roster. My guess is that Karch wants to give Poulter as much experience as possible (in case of injury), considering that Lloyd retired.

I still think Micha is a better setter than Carlini, But it's up to Karch. Congratulations to Haleigh and Megan, I am sure you will represent the USA just fine, and of course good old PSU.

However, Karch had a chance to send Poulter to South America and bring Micha to China for the finals of the VNL. I fear that if it were just about experience he would have sent Poulter south where she would have been the primary setter for the second team (and gotten more on court experience).

True.
But I did not see any matches from Poulter thus far this summer that suggest she was better than Micha. I think Poulter has a higher upside, but she's not better right now.

Poulter does have a lot of potential. She has wide shoulders, jumps well and thus is an imposing blocker (for a setter). I have always thought Micha had certain unusual skills that gave her an advantage such as being a lefty and her powerful jump spin serve. However, at least for the National team, these unique aspects have not proven to be as significant as I imagined. At least recently her hard attacks have been dug, and the International receivers have gotten quite good at handling the power and spin on her serve. So, likely at the "urging" of the coaches, Micha has for the most part used a jump float serve with the National team. Micha's other asset is super quick hands. Even that advantage is narrowing since Carlini has shown big improvements in that area, and Poulter did quite well during the VNL with her digging and defense. That leaves setting. Micha sets the middles better than Carlini, and in one early VNL match, her sets to Annie Drews were perfect. But really all of the National Team setters do a good job running in system plays. I imagine that the staff makes its choices based on how the players do in practice. There is hot competition at each position and we are often told that the inter squad matches are fierce.

One huge criteria for me is actually winning competitive matches.
As a starter, I have not seen Poulter win any difficult matches this summer. There is a killer mindset you need to have when you are down or trying to close out a set. I know Micha has the edge there over Poulter. In any case, I will be rooting for whichever players make the team. I think they all work really hard to do what they do.
