Thanks Ethan, So sorry to see the loss, But against a senior laden team like Stanford I think the ladies gained respect. They showed fighting spirit especially in the second set, I think in my humble opinion they have a bright future.

Thanks Ethan for such a comprehensive report for a game that finished late. I hope you're able to catch some extra Zzz's Saturday morning.
Coach Rose's remarks were both enlightening and a little tough to read. I understand that the team should not accept any efforts that don't result in a win. It's harsh, but he knows what works. As a spectator, many times removed from the team and the dynamics of high-level coaching, I saw PSU's team's chances of defeating Stanford as very low. They exceeded my expectations. I believe many fans were also impressed by their efforts. Their execution wasn't always perfect, but the opponent has a say as to how well a team executes. It seems unfortunate that there's apparently no room to recognize a great, albeit losing, effort against a very good team. I'm guessing the "tough love" is what's needed to get the players to reach their full potential.

Totally agree with how harsh the words felt...ouch!
But compare them with Coach Olmsted's remarks after the BYU loss to PSU in the NCAA Finals. Olmsted: "we won tonight." (or very similar, if not exact.)
Prefer the realism of Rose.

Very nice interview. Coach Rose is the best in the business. He is the best at preparing his team for big matches. By many metrics (prepvolleyball.com senior ace ranking, All-American, front row height, etc.) Stanford has more talent. Penn State with Rose's coaching showed they are capable of beating Stanford.
At this point I think Nebraska and Penn State are the two best teams in the B1G. I will be surprised if Penn State doesn't sweep Oregon in dominant fashion.

Say what you want, Coach is about as subtle as a punch in the mouth. My kind of coach.

Coach is the best at taking his players beyond what THEY considered their limits. However, some players don't want to go there, so that's who I think he's talking about. Read this article that Nyline posted yesterday about the 2008 team and how hard he pushed them. Heck they were already the best, but he wouldn't tell them that. He kept pushing them beyond their limits.
