I wouldn't want to be RR this year. When do you put in non-seniors in the back row to get experience and when do you make sure you win the match? The back row worries me a bit with White, Scorra, Keeton leaving this year. Aside from losing White, I think we will actually have stronger back row next year. Sciorra does not impress and Keaton too inconsistent. Course, losing white is big. And Holcomb has been coming in before Hampton pretty regularly. Who knows?

I agree.
I don't think we lose much if anything with the roster we'll have next year.

I think the losses are significant:. White is superb, Tori Gorrell has been solid as a blocker and has been among the leaders in kills in several matches. And Keeton is a very good passer, except on matches where she isn't. It's not a no-brainer to replace her. But, the good news is there is a libero-DS coming in next year -- Madelyn Bilinovic -- who was rated 60-something as a PrepVolleyball Senior Ace. And Annie Cate Fitzpatrick, a 6-0 OH, was highly-rated as well. I haven't updated my research on the third member of the class -- Macy Van Send Elzen, a 6-4 front row player -- but though not as highly-rated, she may well be in the mix too. And one never knows whether there might be a transfer in. So I think the losses are manageable (and all the returnees will be more experienced). But I wouldn't downplay what we'll be losing.

which brings me to a beef I had last year or 2017 w/Audrey Flaugh. She referred to the DS staff as 'doing their little jobs.' As if serving tough and giving the setter a useable pass is less important that being a hitter. I called her on it and her response to me, totally unapologetic and totally not owning it, was 'everybody has their little jobs to do.' Well at MI and now today we saw just how important receive and pass are. Yes Gabby can scramble but she's better when she gets a 3. And Sutherland and McPeak seemed totally bought into the idea that those ARE NOT little jobs. They're critical. Note also, the Petit article someone posted earlier this week...from back in 2011 crediting not just the players w/all the fancy stats but also D'Erico and Quillico. by name.
Feel better now. Thank you.

Audrey Flaugh is correct everybody has a job to do, But they are far from little, When a well oiled machine is humming along it is a beautiful thing to watch.

I'm about 99.9% certain that if Audrey Flaugh mentioned that the DSs and/or DS staff were "doing their little jobs," she meant "little" as a synonym for DS, and not that the jobs were "of less importance."

I agree. I've interviewed Audrey once, and spoken wiith her a couple of other times. She is unfailingly gracious and a huge lover of the sport. It just seems contrary to her character, as I've been able to observe it, that she would demean the DSs and the role they play. I'd go a step farther and say that she probably also meant that it's the details -- the little things -- that make the difference. If I run in to her again, I'll ask her.

I was responding to a comment about our backrow defense. I really like what I'm seeing from Hampton and Peed. I'm sure at least one other DS will step up next year; it's tough to break the lineup this year.

Rose has said she has "a real nose for the ball." She needs more playing time imho. I like Macall's work too, but whose time should she be getting? (Jenna, Emily or Keeton?) Right now, it seems like Macall is the serving sub for Jonni-who we need for back row offense when Gabby is in the front row. Coach has been mixing the DS rotation quite a bit. So it really comes down to whether Macall can receive serve and pass as well as the others. Jenna and Keeton have been passing pretty well, but somewhat surprisingly, Emily got extra time against MSU. I assume it all comes down to who is doing best in practice.

Two things. I left when we were down 6 in set 1 to make pop corn and calm down. Cause and effect or simply correlation? You may owe me. I've got a problem w/Hord. Her set 2 hit painting the rear line at 20...caused me to spill my coffee. sleeve. floor. pants leg. Thanks Kaitlyn. Seems more like a problem with coffee-

Sutherland and McPeak have been very complimentary about Gabby's setting. Yes they were very nice about all of our players. But I bet Gabby would not agree. I wonder how happy she was about the set over the net that dropped in for a lucky kill.
