I wouldn't want to be RR this year. When do you put in non-seniors in the back row to get experience and when do you make sure you win the match? The back row worries me a bit with White, Scorra, Keeton leaving this year. Fear not. While replacing the most prolific Libero in recent memory will be impossible, I think Hampton, Peed and Brooklyn Hill will do quite well.

I agree Jenna, and Macall, will work well, I have not seen Brooklyn enough to form an opinion. But lets focus on this year and root our ladies on.

Sutherland and McPeak have been very complimentary about Gabby's setting. Yes they were very nice about all of our players. But I bet Gabby would not agree. I wonder how happy she was about the set over the net that dropped in for a lucky kill. Yeah, they were very nice but also a tad optimistic. Sutherland said something about a bad set late in the match being Gabby's first error. Nobody is that good. Most announcers probably want to error on the side of optimism.

Sunderland and McPeak talked at some length about technical issues which were quite interesting.
McPeak seemed quite surprised that PSU mostly uses a two person serve receive, with Kendall covering nearly 3/4 of the floor. This comment surprised me since McPeak is famous for beach volleyball where there are only two to receive serve. It was pretty neat when a camera angle caught an MSU serve directly at Emily. McPeak was able to critique the serve since it was not apparently designed to make our receivers move.
Stats demonstrate that PSU is not aced often. I for one do not find it odd that Coach uses two players in whom he has confidence, rather than insert a third player who may be less able to pass well. It is also not shocking that most of the service is aimed away from Kendall. I don't know if we really appreciate how extraordinary she is at this aspect of the game.

Cuz Jonni is the only OH hitter playing around, it seems like PSU is using a two person serve reception when she is in and three person reception the rest of the time, i.e. a combination of Hampton, Holcomb, Sciorra, Peed. It is so much fun to watch the defense of this team.

I seem to recall that in previous years we used a 2 man serve receive team. If I'm not mistaken, coach does this a lot.
I'm specifically thinking back when Megan Courtney was on the team.

We have also done a lot of 3 receiver work in the past-which elicited agonized critiques on this site (eg: Frantti, Lee and Taylor Leath), and a little bit this year with Cathey. What is different this year, most of the time Jonni does not receive, which was the point that McPeak was trying to make. It can be hard for the OH to receive and transition immediately into a hitting position. The 2 receiver system takes some pressure off of our hitters, and presumably adds to the ground the 2 receivers must cover.

Didn't Jonni have a really bad match in serve receive about a month ago or so (maybe the first Pitt match)? I wonder if she wasn't taken of serve receive after that match? Before that she was a regular on serve receive.

Jonni was not on Coach's list of good passers. As Coach pointed out, the DS group focuses on serving, passing and receiving full time in practice, while Jonni has to focus on lots of other things. Before the season began I posited that Jonni would be in the serve receive rotation, and that would adversely affect her hitting (as it has done historically for others like McLendon and Frantti). It is possible that Coach simply wants Jonni to focus on all the other tasks a 6 rotation hitter must face, including back row defense (which looks more difficult than receiving serve).
