Could Rettke (or any player) both go pro and try out for Olympics, or are logistics (or "amateur rules") such that she couldn't. I have no idea what Rettke intends for her pro career, but it's a little late in the game to think about making this Olympic team. Karch has been putting the team together for years and it really hasn't included Rettke in any significant international competition. Rettke had a good tryout with the national team during Nations League. She proved unstoppable offensively, and a good server.

Good evening, volleyball fans, I was just thinking what a strange season this has been, a team like Stanford does not make the tournament, Wisconsin the consensus # 1 is swept by Texas, and Texas is done in by Kentucky, although Kentucky was ranked # 2 so it is not that surprising, Penn State gave Texas the toughest time up until they ran into Kentucky and Penn State really did not have a normal season with all the cancellations. So I wonder how good ole PSU would have made out if this was a regular season and they had the regular practice time and game time. Just a thought. Happy Off-Season to all and to all a good night. I think I just plagiarized somebody.

I agree she is unlikely to make the team but from the articles I read I think she will likely train with the team going into the Olympics if she is invited. I'm not sure Rettke's quickness and reaction speed is fast enough for the Olympic team. Nonetheless she was one of the best and most imposing college players for the past two years. She's certainly good enough to find a pro team to play on if that is what she wants to do.
One more comment. As someone who watched the PAC-12 fairly often this season I can say the B1G has definitely surpassed the PAC-12 in a big way.

About Rettke: I think the comments about her quickness and reaction speed are probably correct (I say probably because I am not to be trusted with scouting reports) but man-oh-man was she a fun player to watch. When she was on, and Wisconsin's system was working for her, she was incredible. And such a positive attitude. The only criticism I'd make (and it's a B1G one) is that she chose Wisconsin. (I actually don't know if Penn State recruited her, but . . . details).

I'm curious about other opinions of people who know volleyball better than me. It seems to me that Rettke isn't that good of a blocker. She does get a lot of blocks cuz of her height, but she seems to not have that well formed a block which allows hitters to hit thru her block. This reminds me of Haleigh Washington who had good block stats and great physical abilities, but didn't seem to read the opposing setter very well and so wasn't as good a blocker as she could have been. I don't know how well Rettke reads the setter, but I do know she does not have quick feet. She's very much a vertical player, but not much of a horizontal player. Katie Slay was a bit like that. That's why you rarely either player score on the slide. Ari Wilson had quick feet and good lateral movement, so she was a middle who made her living on the slide play. My impression is that Kathryn Plummer is the same way. Just not quick enough to play in international play where you need to be able to be quick enough to play defense. Stanford had her receiving serve and it seemed to me that she was never better than average. But man, can she put the ball away. Out-of-system? No problem, just give it to Kathryn.

To be fair to Wisconsin, (I know, that's not my job ), they had about as many cancellations as PSU which might have led to them being taken by Texas so easily.

The issue for the National team is more about who is already there more than any perceived insufficiencies with those vying for spots. Rettke has to beat out Foluke Akinrodewo, Rachel Adams, Tori Dixon, Chiaka Ogbogu, Hannah Tapp, and Haleigh Washington-excellent middles all. A similarly long list stands in Plummer's way.

I'm assuming (I know, I know...) that when ESPN presents the. entire. tourney., you're going to get higher numbers. Who knows if they even track the 1st/2nd round numbers in a normal year.
I'll add: telecasting 4 courts at the same time required 4 camera crews, 4 commentator/control room producers etc. I thought for the early rounds 75% were really well prepared for the task...which is impressive given how little coverage they normally provide throughout the season. There was one camera crew/production crew that was a little lost...but that could have happened anywhere in a normal round 1-2.

Megan Courtney was an incredible shutdown blocker on the left side, even as a freshman. What a talent!

Megan Courtney was an incredible shutdown blocker on the left side, even as a freshman. What a talent! One of my favorites memories of Megan was a block by her in a 5 setter with Illinois. PSU was down 13-9 (I think) and came back to win either 15-13 or 16-14. Megan had a great block during that run. Megan was such a good blocker.
