Excellent overall effort with fine performances by nearly everyone. PSU overcame deficits in each set, covered for each other's mistakes, and seemed inspired by a great crowd and never appeared flustered. The team looked like what they are-full of experience.
Also great announcing for the broadcast. So much better when announcers know the game, know the correct terminology, and actually talk about the match.
Hopefully, they can keep the momentum for away match on Wednesday (and beyond).

However, the announcers did miss one call that I noticed in rewatching some of the match
At 20-19 in set 2 Adana sent a rocket that landed out of bounds. The interpretation by the announcers was that the ruling was no touch and that PSU was challenging the call.
However, In watching the replay one of the line judges indicated a touch. So I am almost certain that the call was point Penn State making it 21-19 and prompting an Ohio State challenge. That’s important because it shifts the review to finding clear evidence of no touch.
The down ref could not find that and so upheld the call.
I do think that PSU got a break on that point, but it is more understandable under the second scenario.

Just got up here in England.....what a great result for the players and coaching staff!! Unfortunately YouTube doesn't have the whole match but just 5 minutes of highlights, but I could see what a great night it was for everyone there. So envious of you all!!

This season's team is stronger than last season's team. In the middle, Allie Holland is a near wash with Serena Gray. So far this season Allie is hitting at a higher percentage than Serena and has more blocks per set, although Serena has a slightly higher points per set number. At the outside hitting position both Adanna and Erika are playing ahead of last year's starters. Similarly Cassie is playing ahead of Maddy this year. Of course Jonni and Kaitlyn are both mainstays from last year. So, clearly this season's team is stronger and deeper than last season's team.
Today's match will go a long way toward telling us if they are better able to compete in the B1G than their early season results have indicated.
Being deeper is the key for me. When a starter is struggling we have bench players who can come in and actually contribute.

Salima pointed out that teams who hit .316 don't expect to be down 2 sets to 0! Really good point.

With doing the PBP I didn't have time to see check what really was going on and was confused as to the actual situation.

Gotta Love Russ, Episode 243 (Netflix):
Q: For Coach Rose, one thing that I noticed tonight was the eventual kills from quick-set attacks by Ohio State. What were the changes you made to help prevent that?
Rose: “Well, we missed seven serves.

From the press conference.
Parker: “No matter what, win or lose, you’re going to learn from that match — things you’ve got to work on, things you’ve got to change with your team, yourself, so I think that just really changed our mentality. We’ve got to work even harder in the gym day in and day out and hold each other accountable. The level we practice is the level we’re going to play and we’ve got to hold that standard. We’re going to make ourselves better in the long run.”
Has Jonni absorbed Coach's philosophy or what? I thought the quote was from coach at first and then was surprised to find that it was Jonni who said it. Not that I'm surprised all that much. Jonni is such a mature individual.

What were the changes you made to help prevent that? Rose: “Well, we missed seven serves. And he added in his dry humor, "The OH middles would have had even more kills in the third set if we hadn't missed so many serves." So this is another technique in Coach's toolbox. Miss serves to thwart the other teams middles. Which is what you were getting at in a more subtle way.

Being deeper is the key for me. When a starter is struggling we have bench players who can come in and actually contribute. Tho this is maybe the only match this year in which no hitters were substituted for. This is the fewest number of players in a match this year. (I think). I definitely attribute Erika's improvement to Coach sitting her down for a couple of matches. He had that luxury because Nasta has been playing pretty good and so he was able to put her in for Erika. And I think he did that to get Erika's attention, meaning that she needed to fix her attack errors.
I found it interesting that he didn't do the substitution of Nasta for Gabby and having Jonni set. Maybe, (from my great understanding of Coach's mind ), it was, "Don't fix what ain't broken." I like to see that substitution every so often. Especially as Jonni has set pretty well in those situations.

On your second point, I think that the subbing Gabby out and allowing Parker to set worked against PSU's strengths. Parker is our best attacker; she should always be an attacking option, whether in the front row or back. Also, I think having a second setter, as a substitution negatively affects the connection between the attackers and setter(s). IMO, just leave Gabby in. Other teams might hit over her a few times, but the match will flow better. I'd use that tactic only rarely when other teams aren't ready for it.

Or, use the substitution when the team as a whole ain't doing so well. Sorta like in the Olympics, when Micha came when Poulter was injured, she jump started the team. When Poulter came back, Poulter played a bunch better.

On the "Ohio State was all tuckered out from traveling on Friday after its match with Purdue" line of discussion (on another forum that shall remain nameless), it's interesting to note that Ohio State actually arrived in State College after its match with Purdue on Friday (1 hr. 30 minute travel time via charter) before Penn State returned to State College after its match at Rutgers on Friday (a 3 hour 30 minute bus ride from New Jersey). So there's travel and there's travel.
