Markley is an exciting player to watch with big potential IMO. She needs to improve seeing the location of the blockers' hands rather than just banging away.

PSU WINS IN 4!!! 25-22. Close match. Lot of swings back and forth. Whew!!!! Katie with 9 kills. Just watched the (almost) 'full' match replay on VBTV - it suddenly ended at 19-17 in the 4th!! Good win though - shame I didn't get to see the last few points. Thanks for the summaries again jojonito. Nice to see Markley got the winning hit. I thought Clark did great, coming in as she did for the injured Trammell. Any updates on her?

I'd be very surprised if there is any update on Trammel other than something like "I don't have anything specific." Penn State pretty much never gives out medical information (and under HIPAA, they can't without the player's consent). Of course, this will be the time they give a detailed report The weird sport, IMHO, is hockey, where there are only two types of injuries reported: lower body injury and upper body injury. The middle body is, apparently, invulnerable.

Maryland had been playing very, very well recently. They had swept their previous three opponents -- Rutgers, Northwestern, and Purdue -- all away matches. So this was a tough match -- even tougher given that Taylor Trammel was out very early on -- and hopefully a solid confidence-builder moving forward.

I am probably in a distinct minority here (as I seem to recall alot of negativity towards Liz Tortorello-Nelson in the past), but I really enjoyed the broadcast team for the Maryland match. It had been awhile since I had heard Liz broadcast a match, and I had missed the start of the match, so I didn't know who I was listening to. I kept thinking -- she's good. Reasonable minds may disagree And while we're on the subject of "media" coverage -- HUGE props to Ethan Kasales for driving down to College Park, leaving State College after work, and driving back after the match! Great work (and very nice to have some photos, and eyes-on coverage!!!)

Some good news: looking at the replay, I see that Katie Hurta was dressed for the match and standing with the other players on the sidelines! Welcome back Katie!!

Spending inordinate amounts of time thinking about our serving yesterday. There's someone on here that does sideout and other stats, who might want to check in as well. First, I'm bowled over by 11 aces. Yeah 11 SEs, but 11 SAs?!! And in at least two instances, they were successive.
Second: If you look at from the standpoint of momentum, it really sucks to be the team getting aced. And an average of 3.25 per set is a lot. Must get into a player's head.
Third: If you look at it from a meta standpoint, an ace is a guaranteed point. If we were serving tough but not acing, you'd have to look at the side-out % to determine the likelihood of us holding serve and winning those 11 points. I'm guessing we would statistically be expected to have lost 4 or more.
Balance that out against the 11 SEs. Looking at UMD side-out %, we again would have only been expected to win ~6. So I'm thinking that what we traded here was 11 sure points in our pocket and losing a chance at, say 6 or fewer pts. So I could argue going 11-11 nets out at ~+5. So going 11-11 is much better than going 4-4, or even 4-1.
Some may call this the new math. Lol.

Serve receive has really been a problem the last couple of weeks. Maddy's had issues tonite. At this pt it seems that Starck is the best receiver. Correct me if someone know more. Agree in all respects. Passing has been a big issue all season, and several players struggled in this match. Can see Maddy is a little frustrated. Not great when the Libero is targeted. I wonder if any consideration given to Angelina as Libero at some point for her passing ala Megan Courtney on the National team

Great work (and very nice to have some photos, and eyes-on coverage!!!) My bigger concern was Onion, who last time 60% of the instances called our MB Hollandz/Hollance/Hollands. In his case, him being Onion, I would have settled for Hollandaise, cause at least that would make sense. Liz had been kind of judgmental/negative sounding v PSU in the past and I'm guessing given where we were record-wise, she was bending over backwards to sound like the other team had a chance. Seemed clear no one knew how things were going to work out last night, so what I heard seemed more fair. And E, OMG I made that trip so many times (actually just a bit longer and in the other direction). AND it was a late start!! E: True it wasn't a sell-out crowd? I saw something on Twitter saying Terrapin Nation 2100 or something. I thought they had a capacity of ~4000, and usually could move down the hall to the big house when PSU came to town.

Liked that they talked about Russ Rose and found a moment to show pre match comments by yet another grateful Rose coaching tree member. We also got a Micha Hancock reference, reasonable observations on the challenges, just a little technical stuff and positive reactions to all of the players. (Important not to be too critical when a mistake is made and Liz is very good about that)

Your observations about the impact of aces and serving errors is valid, and does not take into account risky serves that put the opponent out of system and hence adds to block totals and free balls.

A few thoughts-Coach's comments after the match were right on. This was an overall team effort and the back row did come on late in the match with some critical digs. This group is not going to win "pretty." But they beat a hot team on their floor, hit a higher than usual percentage and showed the determination we have come to expect.
Thank goodness for Katie Clark. I always respect players like Katie who stick with the program even when they don't start, agree to play multiple positions, and keep on smiling. I do hope Taylor is able to return soon, but PSU is fortunate to have such a good player to replace her. Taylor is I think a better blocker, but I am thinking Katie might get the nod on offense. Certainly Katie is more proficient on slide attacks.
Zoe played her best match so far. Lots of variation in her attack, kept couple of plays alive by hitting off the block, and even had a nice set. I was worried when she was replaced in recent matches, but glad she bounced back.
Saleisa also had a good match. She had to run a lot because of poor passing and generally bettered the ball, got lots of players involve including many back sets and back row attacks. She also served great, played good defense and used her own attacks more judiciously.
