* * * * Salesia also had a good match. She had to run a lot because of poor passing and generally bettered the ball, got lots of players involve including many back sets and back row attacks. She also served great, played good defense and used her own attacks more judiciously. I sometimes think Leisa should earn two letters this season: one for volleyball and one for track. [this is, I think, a pretty old VB joke, but I'm not to proud to borrow]

Serve receive has really been a problem the last couple of weeks. Maddy's had issues tonite. At this pt it seems that Starck is the best receiver. Correct me if someone know more. Agree in all respects. Passing has been a big issue all season, and several players struggled in this match. Can see Maddy is a little frustrated. Not great when the Libero is targeted. I wonder if any consideration given to Angelina as Libero at some point for her passing ala Megan Courtney on the National team One problem with that is that as a libero Angelina could not attack. Even though Angelina has been in a bit of an offensive slump lately, she still provides more value as a potential back-row attacker than any other current Penn State player who could take her place in the back row.

One of my fav replays was of Clark about to get blocked by Russ. So Clark just leaned to her right. Russ's hands were up high; Clark's attack went just next to Russ's shoulder and landed on the empty court behind her. And Russ is very good. Says so much about Clark.
And caught some slo-mo replays of Lesia's backsets. Wow. She really jumps and UMD couldn't read that she was going waaaay back to Zoe. Beautiful timing.

I am probably in a distinct minority here (as I seem to recall alot of negativity towards Liz Tortorello-Nelson in the past), but I really enjoyed the broadcast team for the Maryland match. It had been awhile since I had heard Liz broadcast a match, and I had missed the start of the match, so I didn't know who I was listening to. I kept thinking -- she's good. Reasonable minds may disagree And while we're on the subject of "media" coverage -- HUGE props to Ethan Kasales for driving down to College Park, leaving State College after work, and driving back after the match! Great work (and very nice to have some photos, and eyes-on coverage!!!) Two things. My brother used to go to a number of PSU home volleyball matches where he ran into Samantha(Sam) Tortorello, Liz's sister. (Sam set at PSU in the past). She said that Liz actually likes PSU a fair bit, after Wisc where she went to school. I agree, it doesn't seem like it sometimes but that's what she said. Secondly, Ethan, you do so much for the forum. A thousand thanks for everything you do. And don't you DARE apologize for not getting the transcriptions o the pressers up the same day! I'm so grateful just to have them at all. We don't thank you enough for all the comments, news ets that you do. So thanks again!!!

PSU WINS IN 4!!! 25-22. Close match. Lot of swings back and forth. Whew!!!! Katie with 9 kills. Just watched the (almost) 'full' match replay on VBTV - it suddenly ended at 19-17 in the 4th!! Good win though - shame I didn't get to see the last few points. Thanks for the summaries again jojonito. Nice to see Markley got the winning hit. I thought Clark did great, coming in as she did for the injured Trammell. Any updates on her? Yeah, I had some problems watching also. I don't have much space on my DVR so I have taped 2 hrs and then 2 1/2 hours after it. I lost about 10-15 mins of the 1st half hour as my DMV hung up and I had to user the play-by-play of the live stats. Oh well. I agree about Markley and Clark. Markley is only going to get better as I think she'll use this mach as a learning experience. Nice to "learn" when the team still wins eh? (That's my fake Canadian accent). I certainly never expected a freshman to come on like she has. Really nice to see. I'm looking forward to future recruits as KSC and staff have done a wonderful job putting a team together this year in a short period of time.

An incredible job, really. And not that you're saying anything different, but to be clear, Markley (and Marioka) committed to PSU when Russ Rose was the coach.

But it is to KSC's credit that she didn't change schools when RR retired.

Hopefully our other passers will improve so that such considerations will not be necessary.

One thing I've been noticing is that even though the 2021 roster was more talented, this year's team has much, much better chemistry. I love watching their demeanor on court. Kind of reminds me of the Thailand players, who play with such joy.

I'm also happy to see Salesia being so aggressive. It just adds another threat at the net for opponents to game plan for. Reminds of the good ol' days when Hancock was setting.

Hopefully our other passers will improve so that such considerations will not be necessary. Angelina may be PSU's best passer, but statistically, on serve-receive, Bilinovic is better. Through Friday night's match, Bilinovic had 350 reception attempts, with 10 errors, for a .971 reception %. Angelina had 282 reception attempts, with 18 errors, for a .936 reception %. Again, you may well be right -- not all reception attempts are created equal (the serves to Angelina may have been tougher).

Again, you may well be right -- not all reception attempts are created equal (the serves to Angelina may have been tougher). This is where statistics don't tell the story. You are correct that not all reception attempts are the same. As Libero Maddy is in more rotations, and so she has more attempts. She is also covering I think a bit more area than our other receivers by design. But "errors" are not a true measure of passing success. This might be one area where International Box Scores are a better measure as they keep track of "Excellent" passes. As we have noted, our setter has to wear out her shoes chasing down poor passes. These poor passes do not count as errors, but they do prevent the team from running the system and all too often leave our OH's with slow trap sets, leading to blocks or block touches. Just by the eye test, it seems like Angelina puts more balls on the setter close to the net so we can run middle or opposite first ball attacks. Using the eye test, our other OHs struggle with serve receive. As an example, I recall Salesia fielding a super-fast line drive pass from Markley. Happily, Salesia has fast hands, and managed to get Markley's face high screamer into a usable set. Markely's effort was not an error but it also led to an out of system swing. Some of Defensive Specialists have looked good at times, but less so on other occasions. We must presume that the staff is using the players who show the most in practice to receive serve, and that at this point in the season, have arrayed our receivers in the combinations to give us the best chance for success. I do not know if Angelina (or anyone else) would be able to pass better than Maddy. But passing really seems like the most important ingredient for team success. There are adjustments that can be made to ease a passer's burdens. I am sure those will be attempted. But it seemed like Maryland was going after Maddy in this match. As an aside, I remember one International match where Kiraly used Megan Courtney as Libero on serve receive, and Wong Orantes as Libero on points where we were serving. Not sure that strategy would be allowed under NCAA Libero rules but it demonstrated to me the importance of passing.
