If Pitt and San Diego win Thursday, it will be a matchup of former Penn State All-Americans, Serena Gray and Gabby Blossom, in the national championship match Saturday.

Has anyone else been really surprised by the evolution of Serena Gray’s game over the past couple seasons? She’s much leaner and quicker than I ever remember. Amazing to see such a transformation.

Is it also the first time ever that the head coaches of teams are women?

Let's go Texas . . . or Louisville . . . or, if it come to it, USD!

Let's go Texas . . . or Louisville . . . or, if it come to it, USD! ? What is the source of your animosity toward Pitt? Mine goes back to when Joe Paterno wanted to make the Big East an all-sports league, and Pitt blocked Penn State from joining. Plus, Jackie Sherrill, their football coach when they won the NC, was a truly slimy guy. Plus plus, they are our closest geographic rival -- and were our biggest rival in football before the series was ended (for complicated reasons, but Pitt traditionally had forced Penn State to play far more often at Pitt. With attendance lagging at Pitt, Penn State wanted to reverse the situatioin. Pitt refused and the series ended). Can only root for them if they are playing Nebraska, or a Nebraska-lite, like Louisville. So I will root for them against Louisville.

Both teams played incredible defense. I think Penn State softened up the Badgers on Thursday night, leading to the Pitt win. Well we certainly bruised their arms and hands ...

I have been wondering about the success of our former players ... was there something about the PSU program that slowed their progress? Or is it simply greater maturity and change of scenery which bred apparently improved play?

I was wondering the same thing about our former players. I don't know how many times the commentors mentioned that Serena Gray got her love of volleyball back after joining Pitt.

In the case of Serena Gray, I think it's reasonable to think it's maturity because we're looking at her SR and 5th years at Pitt vs. FR-JR years at Penn State. And the change I see in her is very unique (body shape, lower body fast-twitch quickness on the court, etc.). She must have put in an incredible amount of individual work in her two years at Pitt. Of the transfers out last year, I guess I haven't seen anyone transform their game (but it's only a single year). But I suppose you could make a counter-point and also look at the progress of the players that didn't transfer: Katie Clark, Allie Holland, and Maddy Bilanovic all made tremendous progress within the (new) PSU program.
