This was the most favorable first round PSU realistically could have gotten to get their foot in the championships.
UCI is a really good team with really dangerous hitters. Hilir Henno is imo the leading candidate for AVCA player of the year and is dangerous any given night. He is surrounded by good pieces, good but inconsistent. UCI has accrued 10 losses this year, the most out of any at-large team in history. We have seen them sweep Long Beach and beat Hawaii twice at home but also lose to Lewis, CSUN and George Mason. They will have a home advantage (people will say it neutral but CS-LB is a 20 minute drive from UCI) and PSU has not played too well when they travel far from home.
PSU has been a team that has matched their opponents level throughout the season. I don’t think I’ve seen them dominate a team very much this season. But, I haven’t seen a team dominate them either (aside from much earlier this season in Texas). Their usual MO is close sets or lose a close set then win a blowout. They initially travelled poorly at the start but started to get better by March taking the eventual #1 UCLA to 5 sets. Hopefully with another trip west, they finally get their groove and the seniors get into full gear.

Does anyone know if any of the graduating seniors have covid years that they're planning to use?

Based on how Pav and all of the Seniors have spoken, all but one are moving on. Only Will Kuhns will be staying for a fifth year as far as I know which makes sense since he’s the only one who’s in state. And since there’s only 4.5 schollies in MVB that they’re splitting up among the players, I would assume returning for another year for the Gr.+ seniors would be a significant amount of money to play volleyball in the spring 😅.
